I can't speak exactly for LCC but with 25+ years at United I get bumped off VERY few flights because from Memorial day thru Labor day I work my Butt off making the green so that in the Fall, Winter, and Spring I can take real NICE vacations to anywhere in the world. Non-Rev travel is a sour Deal most of the time in the summer anyway and if you're NOT sporting 25+ years Seniority on your OWN Airline?? You might NOT be going anywhere or getting HOME from anywhere anyway. there ARE some strategies for getting out NRSA.
Fly on Of peak days and Off Peak flights. Have patience!! BE POLITE!! stick with the flight until they CLOSE the DOOR!! connect to anyplace that's in the direction to where you're going between two Hubs and buy a couple of ID90's to bridge the gap. I KEEP ID90's on American Delta and USAir to my favorite destinations.. for example: Delta from ATL-IAD, American TUL-DFW, USair LAX-LAS Since I live in Chicago, getting to a big station (IAD-DEN-SFO-LAX)isn't a problem but ORD-DFW is always full ORD -Tul is always available and American's TUL-DFW is a cakewalk. Traveling Non-REV means you NEED strategies. ORD HKG?? Try ORD SFO,SFO-ICN and ICN HKG (On Asiana, (NICE!!). If you don't Use the ID90? You can ALWAYS cash it IN where you bought it! (usually at your Home station) Summer is a Rip since the USA airlines have cut capacity so tough. It Still is Dicey in Non Summer but My strategies seem to work and have worked for all my 25+ years at United. so some of you Other airline guys post yours from American and Delta because if you've got those carriers handled?? You're pretty much going to get wherever you need to.
And if American, Delta United-CAL and USair can't get you there?? My take is, you probably didn't need to go there anyway!!
