It used to be done that way.
Those where the days, AA use to do alot of that as well. One i was on a couple times a year as a passenger was an MD-80 DFW-OMA-DSM-DFW. Something Southwest seems to do on all its routes.

Less & less every year though. Almost everything goes through MDW, PHX, LAS, DEN, STL, or BWI.
