Lightbulb Omni Air International Pre-Interview Research

I recently got a call for an interview at Omni. I did LOTS of homework and thought that I might help ease the research load for anyone interested.

(Please don't flame me on this, this is my research only. I spoke to several people inside the company and several ex-employees. I do not work for them and I did not attend the interview based on my goals, so I cannot give you much of an interview gouge.)

Interview: What little I know is this, background check, basic technical knowledge test (instrument procedures,) PC-based simulator check (to verify that you can adapt and know the basic procedures) non-technical interview, lunch...potential offer. That is all I know.

Schedule: The proposed schedule is 18 on, 12 off with a 4 day non-voluntary hold out. However, they often ask you to stay on longer (than 22 days) if you're needed. They may or may not give you a choice. I was told that upgrades are based on 'dedication' and your unwillingness to stay gone after 22 days may affect your upgrade time. However, this comes from an ex-employee, so that is unverified.

Pay: The pay scales on this site are correct, about $36,400/year to start. You are paid additional money on any day over 18 and regardless of your flight time, you are paid on day 19 as if you had started into hour 61 (since the guarantee is 60 and you typically won't fly that) and given an additional day rate. I was told $250/pay for an SIC but could be wrong. Second year pay is a tiny jump, but the potential to make captain is based on proficiency and recommendation, so it is possible (and I was told likely) that a smart pilot with good skills and a fast learner could upgrade in 24-36 months.

Union: They have been in union negotiations for 3 years with limited progress. I wouldn't expect that they get a contract very soon, but others are more hopeful.

Potential: By my evaluation, this is a good opportunity for a single person to gain lots of heavy jet international experience fast and make a very fast upgrade. Generally a good company (although I think the pay is WAY low) but you are going to spend TONS of time away from home. (So, it was not an option for me because I have a young family.)

Again, this is my research and I am trying to present just facts here. Where I have interjected opinion, I have tried to be clear that it is opinion. I think Omni has great potential for the right person.

Hope this helps!

FuelJetA -

That is an excellent post of the pros and cons of Omni.

I for one appreciated it. I'm certain other folks here will as well.

Call Out pay after 18 days is 3.3 hours or flight time whichever is higher and $250/day, contract talks still going on - hopefully pay will get a boost but who knows - trip/duty rig would also be nice to have, and yes you are gone away from home but for some people it is not too bad when you get 12 straight days or more at home upon return - currently hiring on the 767/757 side

I read the PM. Thanks guys.

Upgrade 'fast' is relative. Really, where else can you upgrade from random small jet PIC to 767 PIC in 30-36 months?

For corporate that is fast, for airlines, that is really slow. Omni is sort of a mix. I'm not a time builder and currently fly 300 hours/year, so again, it's relative. I can see that to an airline pilot, 350 hours/year is slow, but for corporate it's above the average. Sooo...just good info to make an educated decision!
It's all great info. I really appreciate the input guys!
Fly safe!

been asked before - we should have a charter forum - airlinepilotcentral has a separate charter section - why not here - it will also keep everyone from asking about why Omni is in this forum with all the other "majors" - nobody asks why some of the other non-majors are here -

Just wondering, if omni pilots are only flying 350h/yr, that's about 30h/mo and you have to split that with the captain/fo, doing long haul, u may make 1 landing a mo....does it keep its pilots proficient or does omni do something extra to keep you guys proficient?
