ACT NOW ! Shuster to gut FT/DT in FAA Bill
The FAA reauthorization bill is now on the floor of the House of Representatives. One of the amendments that is up for a vote for inclusion is Amendment #6 offered by Congressman Bill Shuster (PA).
While he got a measly $18,500 in contributions from the airline industry in 2010, it seems he now has a bigger problem.
The families of Colgan 3407.
Word from folks on Capitol Hill is that they are rolling out everything they have to let it be known how they feel about Shuster's amendment and his attempt to gut the rules.
NOW is the time to contact your Congressman. Go to www.house.gov to look them up. Send an email and a fax. Send a Twitter. Send a carrier pidgeon. Tell your Congressman it's completely unacceptable to support the Shuster amendment.
It's time that decisions are made based on safety, not the depth of an airline's political pockets or the ATA.
Spread the word. We each need to take a minute and do this TODAY.
Would improve Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rulemaking activities by requiring the Agency to recognize that the United States aviation industry is composed of a variety of different segments with different operating characteristics and requiring the FAA to tailor regulations to address the unique characteristics of each industry segment. The amendment also requires the FAA to conduct appropriate cost / benefit studies on all proposed regulations and only enact regulations upon a finding that the costs are justified by the benefits.
The intent is simple: He wants to gut the new flight time/duty time regulations being proposed. While he got a measly $18,500 in contributions from the airline industry in 2010, it seems he now has a bigger problem.

We need more info posted about this. Specifically, what is the HR number (of the bill, so we may reference this when contacting our reps in congress). WE all know that FT/DT bill is imperative, but when it comes time to vote on it, our reps need a bill number (HR 262, for instance) that we can refer them to. Thanks!

It's H.R. 658 the FAA Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2011. Trust me, if you just mention FAA Reauthorization, they know exactly what you are talking about.
There are a couple of other important amendments there as well. Congressman Filner (CA) has proposed an amendment banning shipment of lithium batteries until fire supressive packing and systems are installed on cargo aircraft and EVAS systems are fitted for the crews to be able to operate in heavy smoke. (Like what brought down the UPS 747 in DXB last year) We all need to support this.
We also need to OPPOSE the language from Congressman Mica (FL) that overturns the NMB decision on voting last year. Under the new language that Mica wants stripped from NMB, if there is a union vote at an airline, then the votes cast are all that counts in determining an outcome. Just like any other election; you don't vote, you don't get counted. Mica wants the original language that says no matter how many vote, anyone who does NOT vote is automatically counted as a "NO" vote.
Looks like the final vote will happen early tomorrow. Time to send the messages!
