Unfortunately that is the airline industry way of operating....I know United has been doing it for years and I'm sure the rest of the Legacies have as well. You will have 15-20 year United ground handlers get fired in order to be replaced by air wisconsin/pinnacle/whatever contract ground handling.

In the 60's and most of the 70's companies could not get away with such behavior. A combination of laws, regulations and most importantly, public opinion, would have punished any company treating it's employees that way. Any op-ed page would call for the CEO's head plus call him unpatriotic. Today he gets a fawning interview by Kudlow or Cavato or Fortune magazine.
We have become much like the gnu's or zebras being hunted by the lions. When we aren't the ones actually caught, we give a sigh of relief and say "sucks to be you"...and then go and buy something from the company that the lions own because it's so cheap.

He does this action differ in any way from how just about every other U.S. Airline operates? In fact, how does this differ from how other businesses are operating?

Bedford and company, dripping with business degrees and their perceived luxury of not having to spend a single day in the military, have NO idea of the value of morale to unit cohesion. They know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
