Paying for FLiCa?
FLiCA, FlightLineCrewAccess, the electronic bid/opentime/trade/drop software company my airline uses recently made the following offer:
The available service options will include:
FLICA Mobile Access only $5.00 per month - View Opentime and Submit Requests to Drop, Add, Swap (with Opentime) or Trade (with other Crewmembers) from a mobile device.
FLICA Alerts only $10.00 per month - Electronic notification (via cell phone or email) when pairings or other allowed activities that match your personal preferences become available in Opentime and/or TradeBoard.
Bundle FLICA Alerts and FLICA Mobile Access for $12.00 per month.
Is this usual?
Do other airlines make their pilots pay for electronic notification?

Seems like it, but Why pay? I can access the full site on my phone anyway.
I'm not a huge fan anyway...it is slightly better than using crewtrac, but seems to have a hefty lag....sometimes as much as 30 mins to update open time or reserve lists.

I'll be interested to hear people's thoughts on this one. The features you mentioned are "above and beyond" the basic features of FliCa, which should obviously be paid for by the company (you can't work without them). "Pushed" opentime notifications, on the other hand, are not required. I can see two arguments:
1) As a pilot, you could easily cover your costs by picking up trips ASAP (you could add them before those not paying can see them). Or, it's worth it to you to swap into more commutable/higher-paying pairings.
2) On the other hand, if the airline is benefiting from a lower staffing model (thanks to people more readily picking up trips), they should go dutch on it.
I would compare this to paying for premium parking as an office worker in a city. It might cost you some money, but you're able to have more time at home, which is worth it to you.
That being said, if there really is a pilot shortage (hah!), this is the type of fringe benefit that could help an airline attract pilots (along with better pay...).

FLICA alerts is well worth the $, IMHO. I live in-base, so I love day trips. They go senior and rarely last more than 45-minutes before getting picked up. FLICA alerts give me a chance.
You can setup 'quiet times' for the alerts if you like. Mine is from midnight to 8am.
