Hawaiian Airlines

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of Hawaiian airlines? Working conditions/rules, time in junior aircraft which I assume is 717, junior base which I assume is Seattle, cost of living in HNL. Likes/dislikes? Thanks. Any helpful info appreciated.
And yes I realized i misspelled Hawaiian in title...Im sure someone will point that out...LOL!

SVA402 08-30-2011 06:26 PM

I know for certain the junior base is definitely not SEA. In fact I've heard it's over a 10 year wait to get to SEA... I also know with recent hiring, they have hired into all 3 aircraft types. I believe mainly the 717 and A330 but people have been offered all 3.

cactusmike 08-30-2011 09:00 PM

I have heard you need to be local to have the best chance of getting on.

Hawaii cost of living is high, among the highest in the US outside of major mainland cities.

Thanks I appreciate the information, actually that is good news as Seattle is not my preference. Im currently at an airline now and am happy there, however have been invited for an interview at Hawaiian. The Global flying is the only reason this entices me, however the time span on reserve, the aircraft, pay and benefits combined with cost of living in Hawaii concern me. I will def. go to interview just trying to get an insiders view on things there. Thanks again

p1ayn, Can I ask, what your tt time is? Did you have any internal connections?

Or, anyone out there recently get hired/interviewed? What does your resume look like?

I heard one girl recently got hired with 1500 tt, but her dad or uncle was a super senior pilot for HA. Then I hear guys with 5,000 hours that got a rejection letter.
It definitely appears it's all about the internal connections with HA.

seattle is a small domicile (13 CA / 12 FO) so it goes senior. most junior sea fo snuck in at 3 years of seniority. as sva stated, hiring in all 3 equipment. reserve is not necessarily junior. expect to fly a line after ioe. retirement for newhires is a 15% 401K contribution from company. aside from a few complainers, most pilots here love the job. fwiw.

Anybody knows when they're supposed to call people for the 3rd interview? I interviewed last week and am still waiting for a call. When is the next class scheduled for?

Bruddah, seems I can't PM you yet. Would you mind sharing any interview tidbit? Anything at all? Seems hard to find good info, the gouge link on APC is dated, I think.

Hello, I apologize for the late post. In response to the MANY PVT emails, and posts, first off after considering many factors I did NOT attend the interview and advised HA as well I was not attending. My TTL is well above 8k and I have had my app in for quite some time however the exact I do not remember. I may have sent it in when I did a mass application to a few airlines including foreign carriers. Resume was simple, been the same since Ive started flying 16 years ago with only updated times and jobs. Thank goodness its on disc, its gone thru quite a few hard drives. :)
I had no Recs and I guess just good fortune to be asked for an interview. I am very happy to be where Im at, hoping after many airlines that this is the last one but if not, then its long hair, my guitar and the occasional weekend rock gig while enjoying a permanent family life.:) In other words, enjoying life..Good luck to those who went to interview..:)

There was a Sept class also an Oct class starting this week. It seems the hiring will continue for quite some time.

p1ayn 10-06-2011 05:35 AM

Anyone have an idea of when the next application window is opening up?

Have you previously applied?

Why'd you want to work there? HA is a takeover target. Their CEO even stated the they'd like to merge with someone. At 4$ per share and when Southwest and Alaska figure out what they really want to do in the islands, they'll start a bidding war over them.

So how would a newhire A330 FO fit into a SLI with Alaska? Doesn't seem to fit SWA's model, but SWA is changing it's game. Either way, a merger might just work out fine for the HAL guys.....

surfnski 10-14-2011 02:36 PM

Any interview gouge floating around? Tried the search function but couldn't find much. Heading out next week for the interview.

Cheers

Hmmmm. Who else flies 767-300s and A330s into Hawaii, and also likes to fly to Japan from there?

surfnski - Get enough posts and PM me.

surfnski 10-14-2011 08:12 PM

Makin' posts! Anybody know what routes the 330 is flying?

hnldave 10-15-2011 06:17 AM

the a330 flies to hnd (tokyo), lax, las and sfo. it will soon fly kix (osaka) and sydney. the a330 and a350 is a fleet replacement for the 767s which will take place over the next decade. therefore, it will pick up current and new destinations as more deliveries arrive.

as far as being a takeover target...you may be right, we may be acquired. but its all rumors and hearsay. many airlines are in the same situation. should you avoid applying to an airline based on that information? what if hal is the acquirer? this industry is much too difficult to forecast beyond a few years. for now though, imho, its a pretty kick ass gig.

What about other flying options in Hawaii while waiting for HA? Any decent corporate options? It is expensive, and not for everyone, but we like it here...just need to find a job.

navy reserve

Navy reserve squadron in Kaneohe is always looking for good pilots from any service. The more you work the more you make.

Stitches 11-15-2011 06:13 PM

I thought that reserve squadron was getting ready to shut down?

Fishfreighter 11-15-2011 06:21 PM

Nope. I hear from my contacts in Dallas they're getting a pair of C-40s.

Flyfast93 11-15-2011 09:13 PM

Do they fly anything else than c-40s?

Flyfast93 11-15-2011 09:29 PM

What is life like for junior pilots at Hawaiian?
Hold a line, sit reserve only, fly nights, inter-island, etc?

Thanks for any insight

Anyone know a good contact for follow up after submitting an app to Aloha Air Cargo? Is John M. from Maui still the chief pilot?

captjns 11-18-2011 11:58 AM

I read today that Hawaiian will be launcing daily service to NY in June of 2012.

That is Looooooong range Navy plan. VR48 in DC (VR51's sister squadron flying G4's) is being shut down actually adding another plane to VR-51's inventory. Kaneohe squadron is actually growing and already undermanned for pilots.

HAL39 12-10-2011 06:03 AM

Any word when the next round of hiring will kick off?

Caution Terrain 04-29-2014 09:46 AM

Thread bump. Sorry if someone covered this, I searched.
How is the PEK route doing? Is this primarily a cargo cash cow?

I haven't heard of any numbers, but I did a really quick ( and by that I mean I just checked a few loads at random) starting in June, the days that I looked up had pretty high loads like in the mid 200's..

The loads I checked over the first few weeks seemed to be in the mid 100's.. So definitely saw an uptick as this summer starts up...

By no means a scientific study, but it did look like pretty healthy loads on the days I checked..

According to the company, the start-up was showing good promise ..

Hopefully it'll open up more China destinations in the near future..

The 1st quarter SEC filing shows a net gain of 2 aircraft this year, and also 2 net next year..if I remember, somewhere in the 49 a/c range by the end of 2015.. And then the NEO's should start arriving shortly thereafter.
