Lighter beverage carts to save Alaska Air $500K per year
#1

Now this is thinking smart...
Alaska Airlines said that by switching to lighter beverage carts, it will save $500,000 a year in fuel costs.
The new carts will be 20 pounds lighter than previous carts, Alaska Airlines said, and with about 2,500 beverage carts in its fleet, the weight savings total around 50,000 lbs.
The new lighter carts, for example, will have more parts of lighter aluminum and plastic instead of stainless steel, aluminum side panels instead of vinyl, and more drilled holes in areas.
Flight attendants appreciate the new carts, too.
Because the carts are significantly less heavy, "flight attendants appreciate how much easier it is to roll the new carts up the aisle of an aircraft," said Dan Jordan, director of onboard food and beverage service for the airline, in a statement on Alaska's employee Web site.
Alaska Airlines, a division of Seattle-based Alaska Air Group Inc. (NYSE: ALK), said that it expects to recoup the cost of the new carts in less than two years.
How much would a larger airline like American or United save if they implemented this???
