Three dead in Atlantic Airways crash

THREE people were reported dead and another is missing this afternoon after an Atlantic Airways jet crashed in Norway.

The plane was landing at Stord Airport when it ran off the runway and burst into flames.

A total of 16 people - 12 passengers and four crew - were on board the plane which set off from Stavanger.

Of those 12 people are believed to have escaped the crash. Three bodies were found in the wreckage. A fourth person has been reported missing.

The plane, which is believed to have been chartered by Aker Kvaerner, came in to land at 7.30am today.

According to eye witnesses quoted on a Norwegian website the plane failed to stop at the end of the runway, crashed and burst into flames.

Those who managed to escape were either treated at the scene, or transferred to Stord Hospital.

The aircraft is based in the Faroe Islands but runs charters from Stord for Aker Kvaerner for the firm's work on the Ormen Lange offshore installation.

The plane, a British Aerospace BAe 146-200, is the same as those used by Atlantic Airways for the service between Faroe, Shetland and London Stansted, which was launched this year.

It is not yet clear if it will mean the company's flights to and from Sumburgh will be grounded while the cause of the accident is being investigated.

Seriously that is like the fifth commercial airline crash this year, what is going on?

It was 4 killed. 1 F/A. The emplyees at Aker Kvaerner had been complaining alot about Atlantic Airways. They actually had a safety meeting about Atlantic Airways the day before the crash. Same airline and had to do an emergency landing due to brake problems earlier this year.
