I'm genuinely curious. Why do Major airline pilot need a crash pad? I understand regional first officer making $25k year needing one as he can not afford anything else. Some in regional suffer and work hard to get to big leagues(major) hoping QOL is much bettered when they finally get there. Please explain and school me as if my QOL sucks at major as regionals, I may just not even hope anymore.

Has nothing to do with affording it...pilots are cheap. Moving on to a major doesn't change that.

 

That's pretty much it. However in defense of being cheap, I don't see the need to spend a grand a month on a one bedroom apartment when all I need is a clean bed and a bathroom/shower every so often.

 

I think the problem is your misunderstanding of a crashpad. Crashpad is for commuters. Pilots who live in part of the country, but based in another. Whether you are at the regionals, LCC, or legacies, there will always be commuters.

If Pilot John lives in Seattle, but works in Detroit; he needs a crashpad in detroit. A place to sleep the night before he starts work because he can't commute in the day of. Some people live close enough where its "commutable" the day of. For example Pilot Tom lives in Los Angeles, but is based in Las Vegas. Flights almost every hour, he can travel day of. Eliminating the need for a crashpad. Just the occasional hotel, due to delays or cancellations that might occur from time to time.

As long as there are commuters, you will always have a need for crashpads. No matter how much you are making.

 

^^ This...plus the fact that as a commuter I don't want to rent an apartment and set up water, gas, electric, cable, internet in my name as well as buy/rent furniture to only be displaced a few months later but remain caught in a 1 year lease.

Guys at the majors sit reserve too! 14-18 days/month of hotel rooms adds up quick .

 

Or someone on reserve. I have a 20 year United guy in my crashpad. He's on reserve and I don't blame him not wanting to spend $60-70 PER NIGHT (17-18 days per month) Crashpad is the better option. It's not about being cheap. It's called being financially responsible.
