Yeah.. watched it.

So what he is really saying is that the taxpayers need to support the airline industry and the government should make decisions on the goals and paths of the airline industry (Next Gen?)... because that has worked out so well for the industry in the past 80 years.

The GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM and guys like Crandall et. al. are crony capitalists. Just big-government socialists.

No wonder the industry is like it is....

The question is, do I prefer a free market or a socialized government controlled apparatus rewarding those who are politically connected?

Absolutely to this. I haven't seen the govt do much of anything efficiently....especially when it muddles in business.
