Commuting From CHO and or RIC
#1
I'm looking at making a move to central Virginia and was wondering if anyone has any experience commuting out of either of these airports. I'm looking at ATL or NYC but would rather go to nyc for better seniority. Unfortunately its all rjs.

CHO, meh, not so much.

I havnt done it in a couple years but your best bet is out of ric. Cheap parking and pretty good frequency to LGA sprinkled with a few jfk and ewr. Almost all 50 seat rj. Plan on several tries and lots of js riding. I have never done cho to ny but believe they are dash 8 a few times per day. Hard to get the jump on a full plane.

Yeah I'm pretty much planning on flying out of RIC but was just wondering how bad it was to nyc due to the all rj service. ATL would be good since I could reserve the jumpst but it is so senior, id rather go to NYC.
Do you guys know if there is a lot of competition out of RIC for the jumpseat?

Heyas RR,
I used to live in CHO, and like Phuz said, the loads are crazy and erratic, especially during the school year/football weekends, etc.
RIC is ok, but the drive is LONGER than it looks. Crazy long, as RIC is on the whole other side of Richmond. Plan on 90 minutes, easy.
If you live in North CHO, you might consider IAD. I could drive it in just a little longer than RIC, and your choices are likely to be much better.
Avoid living in the city limits. City of Charlottesville taxes will eat you alive. Live in the county (Abermarle) instead. The State of Virginia has a weird system where certain cities aren't actually part of the county they're in, so the taxes are all wonky.
CHO is extremely "clique-y". You've got 3 different groups of people in CHO who essentially do not associate. You've got the University group (students, staff and faculty), the "locals", and everyone else. The locals are especially grumpy about all the people from DC and other "weekenders", and consider the university crowds a PITA. No one mixes at all. The "horse people" are another little sub-group.
I thought it was really, really weird, until I moved to MSP, which was exactly the same. It was all about where you went to high school, where you lived (like there was a big difference between Mendota Hights and Eagan), and what hockey team your kid was on.

You call it weird that the cities are not in counties and when I first moved out of Virginia I thought it was weird a city would be inside a county. I'd ask people, "wait, how could you have both?"
Now, I live in GA, and my city is in three counties and I'm not even sure the city is my city but it's what the address says.
Oh and Georgia has stupid roads and road names.
Wait... what was this about?

Threat revival...
Looking to move to CHO soon and have a few questions:
1. Is the ATL or NYC commute easier (DL new-hire willing to make the RIC drive)?
2. Best part of town to raise kids? Hoping to get them involved at UVA while in HS...
3. Any other pile-ons?
Thanks!
