When I was in college, I would ride on my fathers pass privileges all over the country. Never had a problem getting stuck anywhere, this was also back when a 60% load factor netted a profit. I can't imagine trying to non-rev these days.

I wish they had just gotten tickets for the kids to go home and stay with a relative. Then make the parents wallow around the airport for a few more days to learn their lesson for putting their children through that.

The biggest problem was the person who gave this family the buddy passes, without explaining how a buddy pass works and what kind of seat availability there was for the airport he wanted to travel to.
I still work in aviation, though not at an airline. I have a friend who does work for an airline and am happy that he will allow me to use some of his buddy passes. But we check the passenger loads very carefully for my planned itinerary, and I plan travel dates accordingly.

Bone head move. So it said they were going home to VA? but JBUL doesn't have any directs from SLC anywhere in VA, so probably a two legger with a family of 4 on buddy passes, yeah not so bright.
At that point, if I had no money, I would just apply for a credit card, have it mailed to the airport, then use it and go home. That would be easier than the 5 day event those monkeys are going through.

I see so many times during my commute where a buddy pass will show up on the non rev list after the first flight of the day mainline goes out with open seats. The rest of the day is oversold/overweight 50 seat RJs. If alone they might get lucky...if not they often get stuck for a long time. Who is sponsoring/advising these people?

The majority of all flights go out with an empty seat or two where all standbys including S4's get on. If your do a little homework for your buddies and they are a little flexible on travel days then the buddy passes are very usable.
