Alaska Airlines (AS) has placed a firm order for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, 17 737 MAX 9s and 13 737-900ERs. The order, valued at more than $5 billion at list prices, is the largest in AS history, both companies announced.
The 13 737-900ERs will be powered by CFM56-7B engines and the 737 MAX aircraft will be powered by the advanced LEAP-1B engines, according to CFM International.
AS currently operates 120 737s. “The new order, plus 25 existing firm delivery positions, gives the carrier the flexibility to manage the size of its fleet to meet air travel demand over the next decade,” AS said in a statement.

Actually the new firm order is 50 new aircraft plus the 25 existing.

Works out to 25 airplanes of growth over the next 10 years.

Thrill 10-11-2012 06:55 AM

50 new yes, but 2/3 are replacement aircraft.

I'll wait for someone who has had more coffee to crunch the new fleet size.

Still, it's good news and I'll take it.

Alaska Air enters purchase agreement with Boeing, initial order 50 737s - Yahoo! Finance

..Alaska Airlines (ALK) disclosed that it entered into an aircraft purchase agreement with Boeing (BA). The agreement includes orders for 50 Boeing 737 aircraft firm deliveries, with the ability to purchase an additional 62 aircraft through options and purchase rights. The firm orders include 13 737-900ER aircraft, 20 737 MAX 8s, and 17 737 MAX 9s. The MAX aircraft is the new engine variant of Boeing's NextGen 737 aircraft, the company said. The aircraft subject to firm orders will be delivered between 2015 and 2022.
Currently 119 a/c in fleet. 137 more when you include this announcement and the possible options.

Firm orders are good but how many options you ask? At yesterdays company meeting they said they have options for 69 more. I didn't hear what mix. This is good news.

Does 737 currency and familiarity will all of Alaska's new destinations help a guy get hired over there?

FlyAK 10-11-2012 07:23 AM

Delta experience is so valuable we usually use a 1.5 multiplier for hours flown... Come on over :-)

Good grief. I think Boeing probably has a special department just to think up new designations for the latest model of the 737. What are we up to now, about version 12.0? I guess it's good to stick with something that works.

Nice to see some good news out of the pax world. I buy tickets on AS to get to/from work almost every month. Good product, IMO.
