Is it just me, or is Branson's reputation as an airline guru vastly overstated?

Virgin European Express - done
Virgin America - losing money
Nigerian venture - done
Virgin Australia - see above
Virgin Atlantic - losing money, Singapore hosed in partnership / equity transaction.

Much hype, few results.

That was back in 2009, and airlines were failing due to the economy. The big players are still around (the legacies). There was not one legacy that expired as a result of the 2008-2010 recession. He wasn't referring to Delta, nor United. United didn't even declare bankruptcy during the recession, so there was no sign of it going anywhere. Delta is simply buying the share that Singapore Airlines held. IMO, Delta needs this more than VA. One, to compete better with the BA/AA alliance, and two, because Delta thinks AA/US Air might happen. Tying up with VA is actually good for the overall company of Delta Air Lines. Maybe not so for their pilot group, but I dunno. As for VX, it's still around and announced new flights to EWR in April, which means this airline is planning to be around at that time.

This has been the question I have had with this whole Virgin deal. I agree some partnership or codeshare will likely take place. Things were looking down at VA but I would feel optimistic if I were at VA since this deal was announced. If history is a guide, expect accelerated growth at VA if some kind of partnership comes to fruition with Delta. The majority of our partners have grown while our mainline has shrunk.

Why would Dal need a deal with Virgin America when they already have a profitable relationship with Alaska?

While would Delta need a codeshare in VX if they already get one by default through VA. If anything, this is not good for VX since most of that traffic is better routed through Delta.

Yes, but you will have ALPA telling us how it makes the corporation more profitable and we'll get a bigger profit sharing check and raises even if we stagnate. Oh, damn, I forgot we lowered our profit sharing.
