Without question, SWA does that for the same reason a dog licks its balls. Because they can. SWA is a great company and as long as they can find people willing to invest the money for the type rating, they will continue to make that a pre-employment requirement. I have no chip on my shoulder, and as far as working for SWA, thanks, but NO thanks. You guys work too hard for me. I'll stick with my little two 30 minute flights a day for the 12 days a month that I work.
You were up at 4:39 AM... More power to ya. I did not have a type before getting interviewed/hired in 2001 so you can let that go. I got it 4 months after getting hired and then entered the pool. Would have though in hind-sight.

Work hard - play hard!

I've heard a couple of reasons. One of the reasons is that it reduces the overall insurance for the airline by having pilots already typed before showing up to indoctrination. It also shortens the time that you are at their differences training and you can get out on to the line to start making money for yourself and the company. JMO.

I am in the middle of reading the book 'Nuts' and could see this being a true reason.

Those reasons are great but I really think they just want guys throw down seven thousand or so to show how badly they want to work there.

With what the other air carriers pay for first year dudes, I don't know that they can point fingers. SWA pays more in the first year than just about anyone except FedEx.
