From the information that I have heard, I do not believe it will happen. But, who knows.

That list put me at number 12,916, which means I'll lose my job.

It depends. UAL has more cash at roughly $4B unrestricted but Northwest owns the "golden shares" of CAL. IOW, Northwest can block a buyout offer of CAL. CAL can buy UAL without Northwest's approval.

Wouldn't it be great if we merged using spelling skills as a benchmark, ( I believe you meant to say loser).

Why?

Because both have similar balance sheets and profitability going forward looks essentially equal.

CAL's success at avoiding BK does not count extra in this game.
Are you forgetting CAL's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings in '83 and '91? They've been re-structured many times, and many ways, to reach the balance sheet they have today.

That's exactly the point I'm trying to make. It does not matter that either has been in BK nor when it was. What matters is the revenue, profitability, debt, cost structure RIGHT NOW and going forward.

I'm surprised folks here have the memory to mention the CAL BK's.
I figured UAL's near death experience would be the one you'all would be focusing on.

The golden share thing is another issue that needs to be resolved. Perhaps a NWA-DAL merger will fix that. But who actually wants to merge with NWA? Just heard DAL is talking with UAL again. USAir is making a hostile bid for DAL to avoid NWA too.

NWA must be the ugly girl at the bar. USAir is her sister.

If UAL and CAL and DAL merger into one, then they would all avoid getting stuck with NWA and USA.
