Norwegian Air Shuttle plans imminent opening of US crew bases | Airports & Routes content from ATWOnline

Low-cost carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle is about to open its first US crew base as it prepares to step up transatlantic flights by its new long-haul division.
The first base in New York will open “soon,” while one in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., would be operational in the first quarter, the airline said Friday.
Around 170 cabin crew have been recruited in the two cities; Norwegian is also encouraging US pilots to join its workforce.
The Oslo-based carrier is expanding its fleet of Boeing 787s over the next few years and plans to expand its long-haul network to include 14 routes between Europe and the US in 2014. It also plans to operate transatlantic flights from London Gatwick this year.

Wonder what their pay is? Anyone heard about the pilot pay? I would guess it's pretty low. Not that I'm interested at all.....just curious.

Sweet another cream skimming endless growth start up airline barfing capacity all over the place enabled by cheap labor and zero longevity with neverending press releases about how their presence is really a gift to the consumer because of their superior product. How unique.

They don't even have approval from the DOT yet. I don't think they will get it either.

gloopy, check your facts regarding "start up." I personally think its good, other airlines will be encouraged to open US bases creating more jobs.

No. It's NOT good. It's a scheme designed to avoid labor laws that prevent people working for slave wages. It's a bad move for the profession, and needs to be shut down.

Although it is a subsidiary of Norwegian Air Shuttle, NAI proposes to operate as an Irish airline, expressly for the purpose of avoiding the application of Norway’s employment laws to its air crew. It appears that NAI plans for its flight crew to work under individual employment contracts that are governed by Singapore law and that contain wages and working conditions substantially inferior to those of NAS’s Norway-based pilots.

We have to ask ourselves. Why does a "Norwegian" carrier need to apply for a certificate in Ireland, and have crews work under Singapore labor laws?

Personally, I don't care if they paid more than Delta or Emirates.(Which they won't) It would open Pandora's box, and should NOT be allowed.
