My advice,
Download the ALPA and look at the more section, JSEAT. It will tell you each airlines policy. I got hosed by a DAL pilot js the other week bc while waited in line to check in he went to another gate agent working a different flight (both us were off line ) and checked in first. That said another DAL pilot took the cabin js so I could ride up front (dal medal) . My 7 years of commuting most pilots are overly courteous and professional with about 1% being selfish and are willing to do anything regardless if it's morally right.
Good luck

Usually I arrive 1 hr before, most of the time you won't see an agent anytime before. I try to be there so maybe the crew can see me and I can say hi to the boss and crew as they show up or come off for coffee on a turn. Helps them remember you at the last minute if the agent completely forgot about you or didn't care.
For UA flights I carry some spare js forms and have them prefilled out to make the agents life easy and to put my name at the top of the stack if its the case.
Southwest I just call ahead and make a pnr so the agent has all my info ahead of time.
Being proactive and knowing your other commuters will make life easier as you get to know their schedules and try to avoid each other if necessary. Of course even being nice to the snarliest gate agent could help in the end.
Enjoy misery!
