Maybe, maybe not. If anything it is poor parenting at it's best.

Link seems OK. Some Mom is suing United after they diverted and kicked her family off. Why? She threatened that her Autistic 15 yr old may turn violent if they didn't giver her a 'Hot' First Class meal (they were coach).
Last year while jumpseating, I had to help the crew remove some disruptive, violent, "high on bath salts" a$$ hat. A threat is a threat. Time to answer for it. He wasn't able to use the Bath Salts as an excuse.

Nah, I get along with folks just fine; I just know I wouldn't take kindly to someone threatening my crew or pax. From the limited info available so far;I would have acted the same (as Cpt). And FYI, my sister is a functioning Autictic adult. We traveled on the airlines as children and my mom had a carry-on that served one purpose. Too fufill any of my sister's unique needs that may develop in-flight. She didn't place that onus on the crew.

I have to believe there is a lot more to the story. The captain was probably told a pretty different story for him to make a decision to divert for a disruptive passenger. Threatening to injure others is a threat no matter what the disability. And when it comes from the parents mouth it makes the threat all the more credible.

The Captain and crew made the right call on that one. It can be a very difficult call to make as often your only getting bits and pieces of information as it transpires, second hand and over the phone. I've learned to ask a lot of questions and encourage de-escalation if possible. I'd rather not have to deal with it but it's what we do, move people and people are complex creatures.
Never easy having someone removed, we all just want to get were were going.
