Get real.
According to your reasoning a bus driver should make just as much as a doctor

Because ALL docs are Cardiologists and Neurosurgeons. My flight doc sees a lot of GSW's. Asking if I can hear him now in a whisper voice. Sounds like dangerous sh1t. Also, plenty of terrorists have targeted doctors offices. Man, the day to day life of a GP must be hell. Don't take this wrong. Just proving a point that BOTH are professions. Here's some news. People don't pay us to land the plane when it's working well. They pay us to land that pile of **** when it's falling apart. So just buy another discount ticket and you will continue to drive the hard charging people out of the profession for less than desirable pilots who could be bus drivers. Canada will eventually do the same to the docs. Just look at the flight docs in the military. We can't strike without permission, but we can quit and find something else. Pilots and docs will not go through the years of training and ass pain to make just $100,000 a year. We will find something that pays more. Simple as that. Thanks, have a nice day.

HERE IT IS! Ladies and Gentleman.. What i wrong with our profession you ask?

Well, here we have what we assume is a fellow pilot; who equates himself with a bus driver. After all, SkyBus is paying their A320 CA's about what a San Mateo Country Muni Bus driver gets paid, except the Skybus CA is working more hours.. You see the bus driver is paid by the work hour, not driving hour.

Need I say more?

I think many of you take for granted how difficult flying an airplane can be. There is a lot of automation today that makes your life easier, but it can all dissappear in a second. The next time your taking that PC or new type ride tell me again what a cake walk it is and this is for an already highly trained pilot.
Doctors are smart people but I bet they still can't fly an airliner with multiple failures any more than I can replace a heart. HOWEVER we don't all do these things on a day to day basis. Most docs have a much more leisurely day that does not include heart surgery.

I spent 3 years working on becoming a doctor before I chose to become a pilot because they use to make similiar wages and I knew I would enjoy flying planes more. That is just to help throw some water on the flames to come.
I love flying but somewhere after I started working for the airlines the purity of the whole thing has become tarnished. Mgmt has definately turned my passion into a job.

Armed with what I know now about the airlines I usually tell every passenger I sit by going or coming from work, just how bad this industry is becoming and how much the company's are trying to cut costs. This includes training costs, maint. costs, salaries, and services. This will eventually lead to poor maint. and less qualified pilots and likely more incidents or accidents. I try to do everything I can to get th word out. Most of the general public are amazed at what is Really like to be a pilot. :(

Come on guys, let's not even try to compare a pilots job/responsibility to that of a Doctor. They earn the $'s because they deserve it and have to shell out a good portion of the $'s towards insurance.

As far as the Pre-911 salaries coming back, it just ain't gonna happen. I'd like it to, but let's get real. This is still a great job. If you enjoy it, and can put food on the table---then don't focus in so much on what's wrong and enjoy what's right with the job. If it's turned into only a "job" for you and you can't support your family doing it---then move on to something else.

So why did you quit flying F-15s? The Pay and benefits in the AF is pretty good.............Forgive the rest of us for trying to keep this a profession.

My main point was that to compare being a DR to being a Pilot is apples and oranges.

I quit flying F-15's because I retired, it was time to move on based on my the needs of my family. I was paid very well when I left, can't argue with you on that. When I first started in the F-4 as a 2Lt in Korea, I was making less than 10K a year. But the job was so awesome I would have done it for beer money. It was never about the money.

I too feel that most of the industry is under paid. I think that you and I are paid well at FedEx, but that's another discussion. I never said this is not a profession. The point I was trying to make is that you can't compare the profession of a pilot to that of a Dr. ----Doc's get paid to save lives, we get paid to do a very difficult job well. Are peoples lives on the line? In some cases yes, but it's not a life and death job on a daily basis.

Guess what.... doctors put in like 8 years of education to get where they are(med school fees at UCLA were over $20,000 a year alone + regular tuition). Not to mention these med students have no life, they spend all their time burried in the books. Then when they get out sure they get nice money, but with that comes with an insane amount of work.
Here in Canada doctors may MAX out at $150,000.... it is a crime to see doctors getting paid less then so many other people here(ie dentists and vets for example make more then doctors here)

It is not who deserves to get paid more, it's about getting paid what you deserve based on your profession.
8 years of education to be where they are... Well, let me tell you, it took me 11 years in the military plus 4 years of college to get hired by an airline, and I'm underpaid.

I guess I should've done something for big bucks, and not for the passion of flying and doing something I like, maybe I should've been a doctor, or a dentist, or a vet (I like dogs...) :D

Don Q 03-01-2007 09:25 AM

Oops, I forgot...

I'm already a Vet... a Combat Vet.

Just a little research will show that doctors kill far more people by accident, to the tune of hundreds of thousands a year, than pilots. So one might say we are far more adept at preserving life on an average basis than Doctors.

Here is how doctors killed 7,000 people in a year, it really is just a drop in the bucket compared to the total.

You have got to be kidding me? right? Most "doc's" aren't saving lives.. family practice Docs like my friend who makes (after insurance costs) close to $200K/yr working 5 days a week from 9-5 are dealing with colds, sore throats and fevers most of the time.. he's not some world class surgeon, those guys get paid $300-500K/yr for that kind of work.

Get real.. most "Docs" are just preventative health care providers.

I can't believe you're a pilot and you think so little of your work... Sad that Fedex hires pilots like that for that kind of money.
