Me too. One thing that stuck out for me was the change to a pushback/start checklist that includes turning the beacon on. Evidently that is when the DALS guys start getting paid. How is that recorded. Our out times were sent electronically through ACARS when all doors are closed and the brakes are released.

Doors closed and beacon on. In NYC that switch was known as the "beer" switch. Once the paperwork was brought on board whoever didn't turn on the beacon bought the other a beer. In ATL, it is the Captain's switch and most don't turn it on no matter what until absolutely ready to push back. Per the checklist.

NW aircraft will still be paid the same way, eventually the DL aircraft be modified to be paid off brake release.

You sure? Not trying to pick a fight, but that's not what I heard. Of course, I'm not claiming to be 100% right either. Just curious as to your source.

Did some more checking...DL liked the concept of brakes rel and door closing, but it will be probably like a lot of things...when money is avail they will convert one side or the other. When in doubt rel the brakes and turn on the beacon.

Well, there is such a creature as the beacon police, who is closely related to the hat police. Some say he is the incestuous offspring of the hat police and senior IFS management.

I've never seen an F/O reach up and turn on the beacon, and I'm a NYC ER guy. That being said, the tendency is to turn the beacon on as soon as the door closes. Mgmt IS on the warpath about that, though.

I ALWAYS buy the first beer anyway--

I guess it depends on the aircraft. On the 738, the FO turns the beacon on/off. At least as of two years ago when I left it. On the 767, I've never turned it on, just off after the main door is opened.

Good to know, since I'm 7ER as of end of APR. Although I'll be ATL based.
