Default New Hire Base And Fleet Questions

Questions for current Mesa folks that have some insight:

1) Does Mesa still allow new hires to choose between the CRJ and ERJ?
2) Knowing that only the CRJ operates out of DFW, and assuming the new hire chooses that fleet, how long would it take for a new hire
starting class today (hypothetically) to hold DFW?
3) How long would a new hire expect to be on reserve (if at all) in DFW?
4) Assuming said new hire is holding DFW and upgrades, should he expect to be displaced to another base and/or sit reserve?
5) How would the fact that the 700’s in IAD are being replaced with the 175’s over the next several months impact all of the above?
6) Assuming said new hire is holding a line in DFW, and he has 7 nonstop 1 hour flights per day from his home to/from DFW (5 on Mesa,
1 on Envoy and 1 on AA), would he have a reasonable chance of commuting same day on the front and back of his rotations?

I know ALL of these questions are about things that are very fluid, so I’m just wondering what the answers would be as of today, and any pontification about how those answers might change in the next several months due to the fleet change in IAD or any other pertinent factors. I know commuting is the devil, but in my case it’s the only option (if I choose to go this route at all), so I’d like to get a legitimate expectation of how much pain I’d be committing to.

Thanks in advance for any input!

1. yeah as far as I know.
2. took me 3 months in IAD to get DFW. Some guys got DFW right out of the gate so it depends. However now if you go CRJ I bet DFW is the most likely out of the gate.
3. Couple months. 3-5 maybe. Mesa keeps you busy on reserve so you don’t sit much.
4. When you bid for captain upgrade there’s base slots available from the get go so you’ll know what you’re signing up for.
5. Guess it remains to be seen. No crazy alarm bells are going off and there’s plenty of flying on both ends that I’d say it’s not a huge issue. Those 700s though were tired girls. Kinda glad they’re gone imho.
6. Probably. Just depends. I’d come in the night before just to be safe. Getting home is usually easier in my experience

6. The only time I would fly in the day before was if I had an early show on day 1. This was commuting from central FL to DFW. Always made it home same day to one of three central FL airports or early next morning into my home airport via FedEx.
Flying into work though, I would give myself three chances. Never used a commuter clause but lost an out and back only once due to getting into DFW 20 minutes before my scheduled departure.
Despite of my luck commuting, the stress of always worrying about getting to work or home took a huge toll on my well being, mentally and physically. For that reason alone, I will never commute again for anyone for any amount of money. If you can swing it, move to base and reap the benefits of low stress and much higher QOL.

Also, bid afternoon shows. If you’re lucky, you’ll have two flights that morning to choose from, letting you use the commuter clause if you’re having problems.

Is there any sort of trip improvement ability at Mesa? I'm based in LBB and DFW would be a preferred base, but XJT has a trip improvement window for line holders after the initial award which is apparently REALLY helpful in massaging the schedule to be more friendly. But, they're IAH, which is a lot harder to get to from LBB (in relative terms).

You will be competing with me for a ride out of Bhm. CRJ is in Phx iad Sdf and Dfw. Most Fo do a stint in IAD. That will continue for a while. Phx is senior. You will sit reserve on the Fo Side very little. We are short. Ca side if you upgrade right at 1000 hours expect a year Of reserve.

We have SAP (schedule adjustment period) on paper but with no reserve grid it’s useless. So no.

Gotcha. And as far as competing with you for a ride out of BHM, do you mean for commuting? I'm in West Texas so I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Thanks for the feedback.

Darn I guessed wrong. Pretty lame since you said you were in LBB. Anyway it might be a good fit. If we missed answering any questions please let us know.

HA! No sweat man. I’m always a little gun shy asking questions on message boards. Never know when I might innocently ask the wrong thing and get skewered :-). But so far it’s been all good. I appreciate everyone’s input! Very helpful for a guy that has no clue about that side of the industry.
