Not only that but a pilot with 1500 hours flying in circles is no more experienced than a pilot who has 500 hours,
Or a certain TikTok famous pilot that will have 1500hrs of taxi and run-up practice only haha

The ATP rule ( it’s never been a 1500 hr rule ) was about having prepared, well rounded and experienced crew members on 121 flight decks. Personally as an airline instructor/ examiner I would be very skeptical of a new hire who built all his time flying the same 50 mile flight in severe clear phoenix weather 800 times and viewed the ATP certificate as just a number, not something to be earned through quality of experience. Not saying some can’t do it, just saying “Is this really such a good idea” ? Flying 135 in a two crew transport category aircraft is a Great way to build that time and get paid for it to boot, and being a flight instructor makes you a much more rounded and prepared Pilot. I guess everyone is just in a hurry these days. JMHO.

yes, I think it does.

At the end of the day JO is on record with every other breath he takes saying he thinks the 1500 hr rule is BS and this is his little way of circumventing it. It’s all he thinks about and now he thinks he’s the mad scientist. Unfortunately he has no clue as to the actual state of the pilot market and this is likely just another massive waste of resources. I guess we will find out.

The big issue with this $25/hr program is you have to have your Commercial with single and multi ratings. So a lot of $$$ to grind out those then start boring holes in the sky at $1000/per week (max 40 hours x $25). If you have 300 hours after ratings and use this program to the max 40 hours per week, then in theory you could get 1500 hours in 30 weeks, or call it 7 months. The 1200 hours would cost $30K. Plus the cost of hemorrhoid cream.

I could see Mesa partnering with a flight school and offering this program to the students of a flight school. Instead of a school offering a CFI program they could incorporate this instead.

Yes, but you still need those ratings anyways no matter what you do. This does cost 30k although Mesa pays for it, and it saves you from 3 unnecessary CFI checkrides, with checkride fees easily $1000 or more in many places. Plus you could get the hours fast in 7 or 8 months vs 2 years of CFI. Each month you spend as a CFI you're losing at least 3-4k a month income difference between being an FO at Mesa vs a CFI. It's a really good deal, wish it was around when I got my licenses.

My worry is Mesa will go bankrupt at these higher costs. They've been losing money already because they can't fly enough block hours to cover their fixed costs due to the pilot shortage. It's only going to get worse with the pay increase.

United is subsidizing Mesa with the new pilot rates. It isn’t a secret and has been confirmed by the CP.
