Does anyone know how much the buyout of the commitment is?
I'm curious if it's just the loan amount or there's more added onto that. Tried contacting MESA but never heard back.

Gone are the days of “anybody could be a pilot” and “even monkeys can be trained to fly the planes.”

Dude it's an engine failure. Could literally happen to anyone. It dosnt matter if your are a good or bad pilot. It's an ENGINE FAILURE and can happen anytime, anywhere.

I have done extensive research into this as I am a 43-year-old career changer and am debating doing it as you can get all flight hours done in 9 months.

They don't have a contract out for the public yet, but their FAQs site specifically says it's a loan you pay back at 25 dollars a flight hour, through three years of payroll deductions. The same page also says it's possible to just pay off the loan and never go work for MESA at all. So, if you did 1000 hours expect at least a 25k. That assumes there is no "buyout" penalty written in the contract. But the website seems to indicate you can buyout at any time and work somewhere else.

That being said it sounds like they are full already and have a stack of applications for future slots. I might put in for it anyway just in case, but I am not holding my breath.

Interesting. It seems all the keyboard warriors bashing this concept are wrong? They wrote that it is a bad idea and nobody will go. Hmmmmmm

The website says they may "buy out their commitment if they would prefer to work for another carrier" which doesn't specify that the commitment is just the loan amount.
Like you, I'm probably going to apply for the program once I obtain my CMEL, but I'm not putting all my eggs in that basket. Best of luck my friend.

Something tells me they won't let you go fly at another airline and pay them back just $25 an hour for the LSA hours. It's going to be whatever the full cost per hour is or whatever they decide is appropriate. Read the fine print!
