C-5M questions
Any C-5M pilots,
Did they retain 2 hydraulic pumps per engine or do something different?
Did the conversion fix the weakness of having 4 hydraulic systems but using only 3 for pitch (1,2,3) and 3 for roll (1,2,4)?

I was an ART here at Dover when the C-5M came online. I was in OGV and I had a lot of conversations with the C-5 Flight Engineer who wrote quite a bit of the changes to the Dash 1. He told me that the new engines were producing so much bleed air, that they were blowing ducts out left and right because they could not handle the higher pressure/airflow.

They stuffed an extra hydraulic pump in the CF6 for some reason. The thrust reverser are now pneumatic, pneumatic is automated (no more going into the boiler room to open/close valves) and overly complicated. Electrical system is much improved. The engines are awesome and because they are digital, no more fine tuning the setting going down the runway. No more issues with climb gradients or leveling off in the teens. Even at 840, which is the new normal max.

Yeah, they should have made the second pumps AC powered and somehow powered roll and pitch by all 4 systems. Boeing did it on the 747 and all flight controls were symmetrical down to one hydraulic system. I believe the L-1011 was al powered by all four systems.
I passed an M, years ago, near Konya, he was leaving LTAG with a load, non-stop to KDOV. Amazing.

Harsh man
But as a guy who has flown A/B/C/M C-5s the M is an amazing machine. My normal "7 day" trips (that really turned into 14-19 because we broke so much) are now turning out to me 5-6 day trips. Sure, she breaks from time to time, but the overall reliability of the NEW components are awesome. Travis to Yokota 13.1hrs (200kt headwinds ) with 100k in cargo, gotta love it!
