Maybe the fact that they got rid of all the LOX infrastructure and suspended training of handling/servicing?

They also have 200 grounded trainers, much of the F/A-18 fleet questionable as to safety of flight, more than a few crashed airplanes, and, to be impolite, several naval aviators that aren't with us anymore.

None of that has anything to do with the question you posed which is why it is not easy to just switch an airplane back then LOX.

According to the F/A-18 A/C flight manual block 12 and below aircraft still have LOX systems. (A1-F18AC-NFM-000, page I-2-154)

'Inside Defense' website:

The Navy recently directed Boeing to provide a time line for when the company can retrofit the T-45C Goshawk with a liquid oxygen system, Inside the Navy has learned. The service is conducting a comprehensive review of the physiological episodes pilots have reported for both the T-45 and F/A-18. Physiological episodes occur when aircrew experience a decrease in performance due to cabin pressure fluctuations, air contamination or other factors in the flight environment."

Don't know if this is accurate, just FWIW.

What you and I are missing is expertise in this field. We don't know what we don't know. Returning back to the old spec might be much more complicated than you and I would ever know.

And consider this:
Bruce Jenner was converted into Caitlyn Jenner.
I'm no expert, but I'd guess there would be significant problems in converting Caitlyn back to Bruce.

When in the USAF I was a field maintenance officer and the LOX shop was one of my responsibilities so I do have expertise in the field. Removing a modification and returning an aircraft to its original configuration is an everyday exercise. Removing a component or system with a high failure rate and replacing it with a different system that works is also an everyday exercise. On the face of it this looks to be a field modification of a week or ten days. We will see.

Did the T-45 originally come with LOX? Or did it come from the factory with OBOGS?

The T-45 flight manual available online only references the OBOGS system I believe.

I'm guessing a LOX retrofit will be a lot harder than on the Hornets.
