On a semi-related note, for anyone currently in a Guard or Reserve unit, could you detail your experience with the SCROLL process? Who you initiated the process with and timeline?

Frosty good luck! It sounds like you're definitely a worthy candidate to be hired.
Hello,

You have in bass ackwards, ANG is much better than AFRC.

The new Reserve SUPT application process is a bit convoluted. In the past a Reserve unit would hire X college grad to send to SUPT and help X along the way. The new centralized Reserve SUPT selection/hiring process somewhat removes the local unit from vetting/hiring X. The guard still hires and vetts internally.

Also, the Guard does a much better job promoting people. If Guard unit X has 5 open O-5 slots, 5 people get promoted (and promoted earlier than their Reserve peers). The Reserve has the centralized promotion system. Pilot Y may or may not make O-5 due to this centralized system - even if pilot Y is in a unit with several open O-5 billets.

I know several pilots that left active duty and pinned on O-5, in the Guard, at least 2 years before their Reserve peers. I also know tons of Reservist pilots that either did not make O-5 or pinned on after their 2nd or 3rd board. The Guard simply does it better.

The SCROLL, Ha! Another horribly archaic assinine Reserve burden.

To clarify, I'm not picky about location and I would prefer Reserve because I believe they travel world-wide more than Guard (I could be wrong) but I am open to getting a Guard position as well. Also i'm not particularly concerned with how fast I make rank. Money/rank is secondary to having a fun mission and traveling the world imo. I would also like to stick with either C-17s, C-130s, bombers, or KC-135s in that order. If anyone knows of pilot boards coming up i'd greatly appreciate any info, i'm currently having to cold-email every unit i'm interested in and try and find the right person with board info.

Bogidope and baseops.net are the best place to find upcoming boards. Guard guys travel as much as reserve guys from my limited experience. The iron all goes on the same deployments/TDYs on a similar deployment cycle. You can apply unsponsored to the AFRC UPT board (they are once every two months) and get a UPT slot and figure out your unit later. That’s be the quickest way to knock out the admin stuff (MEPS/FC1/AFRC board). If after that you find a guard/reserve unit they can sponsor/hire you (until you start, at which point you’ll likely have to focus on reserve units).
