The lifers, game-players, and "thank you sir may I have-anothers" will take it since they were planning on being abused children to Uncle Sam anyway. The rest will laugh on their way out the door.

That amount of money won’t impact the financial calculation of staying or going. If there is one lesson I learned from 20 years in the USAF, don’t sign the bonus if you want AFPC and your leadership to care about your assignment wishes. Being a free agent is worth more than the bonus. If you want to be an airline pilot, the bonus is irrelevant to the decision. Only the job market matters. Long story short, the bonus wastes taxpayer money for no actual return.

edit for typo

In the late 1980's the USAF offered bonuses, I think it was around $20K to commit to the 14yr point. Of course if you didn't take the bonus you weren't a "team player" and were on the CO's fecal material list. The only ones that took it were those who became pilots because that's the best way to make General in the Air Force. And what's ironic is a few years later after the collapse of the Soviet Union many of the bonus takers got Riff'd anyway.
