Default VSP Payment Question

I outprocessed finance today and they said that DFAS is only paying VSP for your total years of service, rounded up if you're over 6 months and rounded down if you're under six months. IOW I'll have 10 years and 2 months but finance says they'll only pay me for 10 years. The VSP message and the calculator specifically said we'll get paid for each month of service. Can anybody confirm that DFAS is paying for partial years of service?

I'd say that your base finance is hopefully being clueless and opinionated, though misinformed and wrong. Go back, ask for the supervisors, show them the message and the calculator. They were to do a precalc of the final $ at that outprocessing. Show them the part that states the payment is due on your DOS, not some random number of days later determined by local finance's smell of the wind too and see if that helps. Find out the exact number of days after DOS when they plan to have the funds in your bank.

I agree...my buddies have had nothing but problems with base finance. If you don't think something is right, start asking different folks the question until you get the answer you want.

Default You are right, they are wrong!

You absolutely get paid for completed months of service. I know this b/c I am getting my deposit for 8 years and 11 months next week. Kicker is you don't get partial month credit, so I am five days shy of my 9 years, something I could have done better had I realized at the time...

I also know this because I have the original release message for the Force Shaping 07 board. It is dated 26 Jul 06 and your MPF should be able to pull it up. Check Part IV, section 19, para A. "Each full month of active military service that is in addition to the number of full years...will be counted as one-twelth of a year."

Your MPF actually enters in your DD214 the amount of time your speration pay is based on. Finance can't argue with that or the offical release message.

It all used to be posted on the website below but everything is updated for 08. Search around you may still be able to find the old messages online - if not local MPFs should have records. The calculator link shows where you enter months also.

Don't let the finance weanies still your money b/c they are not smart enough to do thier own jobs.

Hope it helps...

Make sure your MPF gave you Home of Selection versus Home of Record also. It is part of your entitlment under VSP. My MPF didn't know this and I had to show them and get them to ammend my orders. Could make a huge difference depending on what your plans are--gives you a year vs 6 months to move among other thing.

How do you get a year to move? Do you get a year non-temporary storage too? I might be pushing the 6 month window on having my household goods in storage due to the fact Im having trouble selling my house...

First a correction to what I said earlier. MPF puts the time your VSP is based on on your seperation orders, not your DD214. Sorry. It goes in block 21b.

In regards to HOS, VSPers with at least 8 years of continuous active duty with no break in service greater than 90 days are entitled to HOS vs HOR. The full details of HOS are outlined in the JFTR (if you are having trouble sleeping you can download it and read it) but the jist is:
1. You can move anywhere you want, not just back to where you entered from and they won't charge you the difference
2. You get 365 days to complete your move versus 180. So if your stuff is still in storage they can't charge you until a year from your DOS.

There was a matrix on the AFPC website entitled "Services & Benefits Available Under Force Shaping" This was where it was laid out, however, I can no longer find it with all the FY 08 stuff on there now. It should still apply though, especially if you were 07. Keep looking it should be there somewhere.
