Here's a question for you guys. Current regional pilot, 27yrs old, BS Degree, good grades. What are the odds of getting a slot in the reserves? Is it too late?

Not enough info...

How is your Vision?
Are you physically fit?
GPA
Accredited Univ.
AFOQT & BAT Scores

The odds may also change depending on each unit's current manning, and the number of applicants applying to the unit. Contact the unit that you would like to join and inquire about their application/interview process. Additionally you can contact a AFRC recruiter to get the process started and apply to the UPT board as an un-sponsored candidate.

Living close to the unit is also a plus.

20/40 corrected to 20/15 with glasses
GPA was 3.3...Riddle (no jokes please, did it online while having a full time job to pay for it.)
decent shape but could be in good shape with some hard work
have not taken the tests yet, i wanted to know if I even have the time. I have the idea in my head (read somewhere) that they select for slots that are open a couple of yrs into the future. If thats the case I'm not sure I have time to start training before the age limit hits. Thanks for the reply. I will contact the unit and see what they say.

It can be done but you need to get on it ASAP! Get the AFOQT done. Check out www.baseops.net. You need to get picked up by the middle of next year to have a realistic chance. You need to start UPT by your 30th birthday without a waiver and those are hard to come by for civilian only applicants.

Got AFOQT scores and scheduled a BAT test.
Talked to an Active duty recruiter he is preparing a package for me then Talked to Reserve Rec., she said it is almost impossible to get a UPT slot unless your dad is a Col. and higher or prior Active Duty exp. same goes for the ANG. I live in central Florida and my options are limited; I'm almost at point to go active and give up the regional seniority....

A.) Quit talking to recruiters.....talks directly to the ops folks. Get some names and POC and stop by for a visit.

B.) Quit talking to recruiters.

C.) Did I mention not talking to recruiters?

Most recruiters have no interest in recruiting pilots. To get the reserve or guard job you will have to try to find contact numbers and just call and find out if any are interviewing. I know plenty of guys flying in the reserves whose fathers are not colonels, me included. Just get out there and contact every reseve unit you can, eventually it will pay off.

What do you think of going Active Instead?

I was never AD but spent 12 years in the ANG and am now in the AFRC (Reserves) and I would highly recommend staying with either the ANG or AFRC. You can continue your flying and still do the mil thing. For me, it is a good marriage. When I get tired of one, I spend more time at the other. If you go AD...you are totally at their disposal.

Either way...you will have a ton of fun! Serving is wonderful thing.

Nothing wrong with going active duty at all. I had apps in progress with the navy, marine corps, and air force while at the same time applying with the reserves. I'm definately glad I went into the reserves, but I had to wait a little longer than if I would have gone active. I wanted to fly in the military more than anything else so I made sure I had a back up. Good luck, and you will get great advice from both active and reserve pilots on this forum.
