I am trying to meet a deadline for a UPT slot, and need to take the AFOQT before I can apply. How long did most of you prep before you took the test? I want to meet the deadline, but don't want to screw myself on the test just because I rushed through it. Thanks for your help.

I didn't prep. I was told one week in advance to show up on a saturday to take it. If you know math pretty well, a thing or two about basic aircraft instruments, and english, you should do alright. It is actually pretty hard to fail but I have met people who didnt pass, even with preparation. But very very few people have that problem. Also, if you dont get the best scores, you can retake it after a few months (I think 6).

They do have study guides - you can get one at Barnes and Nobles or any bookstore. Helpful because you will know what to expect and can save time on reading the directions during the actual test. Unless it has changed (been about 15 years since I took it) timed portions are a significant part. ie wiring diagrams tests with 100 questions and 5 minutes for the test. Obviously no one will get to all the questions but the more you get to the better your score and seconds wasted reading directions are not spent answering questions.

I didn't prep either. The test isn't that difficult. Go to your local bookstore and get a copy of the study guide and read through the sections that you are weak on. If don't have time, don't worry too much about it. Like zondaracer said, you can retake it if you don't like your scores. Just remember that your most recent scores count regardless if they're better or not.

Familiarize yourself with the test format, know what kinds of questions will appear in what sections....maybe take a self timed practice from the ARCO book.
You cant know what exactly to study so I settled for knowing what kinds of questions and the sections of the test.
I took my AFOQT in December 07, and I used the ARCO 6th edition. It worked great, but I dont know what to tell ya about the 4th edition....

Back when I was a pup, we just took it. No prep needed. No real gouge/pony either <g>. Am sure whenever the test is offered before theh deadline will be plenty of time. Good luck. BTW, we had some guys take it twice.
