We occasionally get helo bubbas making the switch to fixed wing (at least to the Falcon). Most of them are either in the engineering pipeline or a command & control type. There are also rotary wing to fixed wing transition boards that meet in which rotary heads can apply to swap over, but they typically don't select many for it and it's competitive. Those that do swap go straight from the helo into their specific aircraft transition course and do not go back to Navy flight school for advanced training.

Every once in a while an ex-Army DCA comes through the course with zero fixed wing flight time and we have to try to teach them to fly fixed wing the first time in the Falcon which proves to be quite the challenge.

I am finishing up my college degree in December. I'm currently a CFI working on my CFII. Just wondering if you have some advice about joining the Coast Guard, quality of life, duty times, flying opportunities. etc. Thanks

Default Army to CG

DA40driver, There is alot of info on www.airwarriors.com about the coast guard DCA program and more.

I am looking for any information regarding Army Helo guys right now. From what I gather, there is a hurt in the CG FW community so are the boards leaning to pick up more of them? I'm am attempting to gather my packet up, (alot more work than I thought it would be, haha). Also, does anyone know if I actually have to leave the Army then Join? Or how can I go about going directly from the Army to the CG? The recruiter I have been talking to is pretty scetchy on that subject. Thanks for any help!

I’m currently working on my second degree at Texas A&M Corpus Christi and the school is located right next to NASCC (Naval Air Station Corpus Christi) and I see a lot of turbo prop trainers that looks like T-34’s and a lot of king air’s with training colors but I’m not too sure if they are trainers or just coast guard colors. I don’t see a lot of rotor wings; I’ve only seen one CH-53 fly by twice.

Hey Hooker 53, why don’t you look into army fixed wing, are you not interested in them or what?

I can't help you much there. Post in on airwarriors in the CG section and there are some ex army guys that can probably help ya.

All the prop's are the Navy trainers. Only Coast Guard out of Corpus are Dolphin helos and Falcon fixed wings.

Cargo hopeful -

What you are seeing out os NAS Corpus Christi are the T-34 Primary trainers and the T-44 advanced trainers for multi-engine. Those squadrons at the base train Navy/USMC/USCG and some Air Force student pilots.
If you are seeing ORANGE and WHITE - they are trainers. If you are seeing RED and WHITE - they are Coasties.

Coastie Pilot - Do they have Falcons stationed at Corpous Christi now? I only remember the helos on the north side of the field back in the early 90s.

Interesting that falcon’s are here. I honestly don’t see or even hear any jets fly over at all. I’ve been here since June 1st and still cannot remember seeing or hearing a jet fly over. In between classes I’m always wishing or hoping to see at least one jet do a low approach like all the turbo props do… I do see P-3’s every now and then.

FlyBoyd, are there specific times that the jets go up or am I just always missing them?
