This is my first posting, so forgive me for it's length...I want to try to get some input about the ANG. My boyfriend has applied for & been offered a Nav position with the ANG. He has done the following: (1) an interview (fall '04) and (2) completed a flight physical (apr '05)...but nothing else has happened. His interview was way back before we met & his physical was over a year ago....so, here come my questions....

(1) Is it "normal" for things to take this long? I feel like something should have happened by now.
(2) He is turning 34 this summer & I understand that he will need an age waiver in order to fly again. Does anyone have any insight about how likely it is to get an age waiver?
(3) If this all falls together, he has told me that he will have to go to multiple trainings that will last about 18 months. Is anyone familiar with this process? Is it different depending on what he'll be doing?
(4) I understand ANG to be similar to the reserves (1 weekend/mo & 2 or so months/yr) so, once training is finished, should I expect him to be gone more than this?

I have no experience with anything military, so forgive me if these seem like silly questions!

 

I'm not military but come from a military family so here's what I got:

My cousin is ANG (kinda) with the 157th Fighter Wing in Hawaii (F-15's). He got accepted into his slot over a year ago and is still fighting to get medical clearance, security clearance, training dates, etc. From what I've seen, long frustrating waits are common but the pay off in the end is worth it. On the flipside, my lady friend got accepted and started training in less than six months, but she was ROTC going into the Army National Guard (blackhawks). But like I said, I'm not military I just know a bunch of them so I could be wrong.

 

P.S. - ANG goes through "seasoning" where he'll be pretty much full time for about a year after training. After that he's free to be a weekend warrior for the next 10 or so.

 

STAR 77...the answer is "NO". Something is wrong. He needs to get on the stick and find out what the hold up is all about. My son was trying to get a pilot slot in the reserves about 10 years ago.( he got one) Passed all of his tests (AFOQT) and others, took all of the tests and waited and waited, and nothing. He found out that the holdup was something to do with a dental exam that he took months ago. He got on the base, tracked down the dental folks and said to them "Look, I`ve been waiting months, what`s the hold up?" The head man told him that it looked like with his mouth full of bad teeth, that he didn`t stand a chance. My son then told the head man "Hey take a look in my mouth, zero cavaties, no fillings, nothing"...They found that the USAF had put his name on someone else`s report. No one is gonna look after your friend like he will. Light a fire under him and find out what the hold up is all about.

 

I agree, have him call the unit that accepted him and follow-up. Especially if he has not heard from them in a while. That time-line is way too long. The 1.5 yrs of acive duty for training is accurate. Good pay and bennies during that time. They may be waiting for a training slot to come up but the squeaky wheel gets the grease. There can be turn-over at a unit and people fall through the cracks.
