Heard nothing but great things about entire 176th, but the only part I know is the 249th (C17), been working with them for years. Great unit, great group of guys, you'd have a great time.

Flying is more than 1 weekend a month/ 2 weeks a year. I think it will be a challenge as a college student. Granted, more you work more money you make, which is a good thing. Just be aware the commitment you'd be buying into.

When you say you want to go active when you finish college that brings up 2 questions:

1--Why in the world would you want to do that?

2--Active as a load, or would you seek a commission?

Keep in mind the guard recruits for the guard, you might not want to mention your intent to go active once you finish college.
Good to know about the group.

OK, I am alittle confused about the whole Active duty thing. What exactly is active duty? I was thinking it was more full time, than just part time.

I apologize, I am learning about all this as I go.

several of our reserve loads finished up undergrad while not activated. A couple were then hired as pilots. It's a good program, I'd guess it'd be about a year off of school with the delays between training. my 2 cents

I think you're just mixing up terminology. When you finish college, you want to stay in the AKANG, just do more of it, is that what you mean by "active duty?"

I took it to mean you wanted to leave the ANG and go over to the active air force.

I can't really recommend it one way or another, some people love it some hate it, if it sounds cool to you then you'll probably like it. I love the mission of the C17. Only you can say if you can hack it while going to college, but it does seem possible (as liftr mentioned). And you can probably fly as much as you want during your school breaks, which will help $wise. Plus, knowing how much booze costs in AK, getting short trips to Cally and loading up on cheap booze is a wise budgeting move. Trust me on this--you can carry a lot of beer in a C17.

Let's see...170,900lbs (wikipedia sourced payload limit)/14lbs (avg 12 pack weight) = 12,207 12 packs; 12,207 x 12 = 146,484 bottles of beer in a C-17.

I suppose that will you get you guys through the winter!

Not by a long shot, but it's a step in the right direction

Plus occasionally we actually have to carry some cargo, which cuts down slightly on the max ABCL (avail beer cargo load).

There's always a catch, isn't there?

Just be careful during your interview. The money for your training and seasoning is typically centrally funded (i.e. it doesn't come directly out of your squadron's budget). However, your squadron has a limited number of training slots, local sorties, overseas missions, instructors, and classroom space during all the other BS training that you'll need. The bottom line is that most ANG and AFRES squadrons will hire you based on your personality and ability to "earn back" the costs associated with your training through you remaining a current, qualified, and participating loadmaster. So if word gets out that you're looking for a 1-2 year ANG job followed by a full time active duty job, it might affect their decision to hire you. Depending on whether or not you have buddies in the squadron who help you get hired, it might also impact their ability to get others hired in the future.

Don't be afraid to say that you'd like to learn more about full time career opportunities within the Guard though.

Good luck,
Riddler
