The first attempt to to develop a B-1 replacement aborted, they are just starting to make noises about trying again, so I'm not sure it would make any kind of sense to do this...that's a lot of strike capacity.
Of course, as the article mentioned, the AF could be bluffing...threaten to kill something important to protest budget cuts. Wouldn't be the first time.

I thought it was the 52 replacement that got scrapped.

Just another plane in the long line of things to replace the B-52 that did not work out. B-58, B-70, and now the Bone.
Does anybody remember the drawing floating around the fax machines in SAC in the late 80s/early 90s? It pictured the B-1 retirement ceremony cica 2020, and the bottom footnote called attention to the B-52 still doing pattern work in the background.
I would find it highly ironic if this came true. I hope not because we need every delivery system stealthy and non stealthy and more.

Without getting too deep into capabilities. B-1 is not nuclear anymore. This alone would be a good enough reason. Also the B-1 can't fly high or get anywhere without a tanker. Hours wise the B-52's are still young. The H models did not fly in Vietnam. They sat alert. I could go on a long time as to why the B-1 will go before the Buff. B-2 is not going anywhere anytime soon many of the same reasons.
