Most Puckered Instrument Approach
#72
Took off out of Bagram in a raging snowstorm to shuttle some DVs down to Kabul. at about 2 miles out on the approach, the ILS went down and as we went missed approach, they called the field below mins. So we headed back over to Bagram, where their ILS just went t!ts up as well and the weather crumped just like at Kabul. We had the gas to get to Mez or Kandahar, but the weather was crap everywhere. Ended up flying a ($h!tty) PAR to mins at Bagram, started to push the power in for a missed approach when I saw the runway about 200 yds to my left, sidestepped, landed, and took my first breath in about 20 minutes. I pulled up ATIS and they were still calling something ridiculous like 1000 overcast and light snow with a mile vis. Riiiight. After all that, we only logged a 0.7.

If this is the way wars are being run today, we are in deep do do.
Todays "brass" would "gag" seeing our fighter cover drop CBU-2 too close to the spraying formation overflying "hot targets." Every once in a while a few CBU pellets would hit a UC-123. Our choice - keep it in close and tight. The fighter pilot who "hit" us buys the beer.
I guess today they would ground both fleets, convey a panel of generals to investigate and conduct flying evaluation boards for the pilots involved.

Do you remember an enlisted crewmember named Ron Euscher that was a Ranch Hand type? He would have been about 32yrs old or so.
just curious. When I was an engineer many moons ago. He was a E-9 loadmaster terror in the late 70s/early 80s.
