I'm on the staff right now at a MAJCOM. I'll dig around into the numbers with the A1 guys. Even if only one guy gets the boot, that will be enough to create the effect we're discussing. It's been my observation that people often make career decisions based on what "could" or "might" happen to them, not what will "likely" happen. If the possibility exists that you might get shown the door, that's enough for many people to start looking at other options. The exec in my division is concerned enough about he's been bending my ear about FDX weekly. Granted, he's an AWACS bro and not a fighter guy, but the fear is definitely out there among the RegAF pilots.

Yeah, per year, for five years. The status quo.
Make that $35,000/year every year till 20 years, or $50,000/year for five years and then I think we reach a point where money could actually retain someone.
Right now it's probably true that the bonus is a plus for guys who were going to stay anyway, but probably not enough of a carrot for the guys on the fence or on their way out.

can somebody actually validate the claim that pilots were not offered selective continuation? and if so, what was their mws and did they have something unfavorable in their PIF? talking with an 0-5 staff weenie fighter pilot this week he claimed the likelihood that ftr pilots would get non-continued was slim to none.

they will change the adsc to 15 yrs soon, along with a 15 yr lump sum retirement option. it really is the perfect deal for pilots and big blue. if you dont want to be a general, you could fly for 15 straight years and get a lump sum pension payment, then go to airlines before your 40. wouldnt have to offer a bonus either......maybe i should consult some of these generals about smart manpower mgmt.

DoD panel calls for radical retirement overhaul - Air Force News | News from Afghanistan & Iraq - Air Force Times
well, this is significant. if the airline hiring boom really does happen, we'll have to stop loss pilots if we want to fight any wars.
