Haha Ya, the 220 nozzle had a nasty habit of falling off! This was a GE-100 motor.

Do you mean actually not come out of afterburner or that the nozzle won't start to close from the fully open position?

The issue with the Pratts back around 98 - 00 was fatigue cracking. While I was at Luke AFB, we had two jets go down after the nozzle FELL OFF the airplane! Pressure differentials get screwed up, fans start spinning faster than they should, blades liberate, fuel cells get shredded, buddy jumps out, and gets his CSAR delayed because the rescue chopper can't get through all the news helos... 90% rule in effect...

He did, but the handle broke off.

There was a Pratt-powered Viper that had the entire Afterburner LINER Section AND Nozzle fall out at Bardenas Range in Zaragosa, Spain (Early 1990s, I believe). Engine still ran, although at full RPM, it had very limited thrust. He limped 35 miles back and landed.

I seem to remember a story, VT ANG jet I think, of Viper stuck in full AB. Couldn't shut it down by any means. Wound up turning circles over head the field until it flamed out to a successful SFO. I'm sure those last five minutes of gas hurt.

Maybe he used the vertical a little to help out with the pain

Happened more than once. Several times over the years they had problems with the fuel shut off valve cycling closed. Initially they were hard wired opened till a fix was found. If you had a stuck throttle with a valve wired open you had to wait for the fuel to run dry.

Back on topic. Heard a rumor it was an O-6 in the seat, and he was IFR in the cockpit.
