AFOQT Preparations
I'm planning on taking the AFOQT sometime before the year is out. I wanted to see if I could get any pointers on what to do to prepare for the test, especially when it comes to study guides and what not.
There are obviously a lot of books out there that are made to prepare someone for the test, but which are the best at helping me for the test?

I took the AFOQT back in 1984 or '85 at Det 157 @ ERAU. All I can tell you is to go over the study guides. Although I didn't qualify for Pilot or Navigator, I scored high enough to qualify for an Engineer's slot. Still baffles me to this day.
Years later, I took the Army's OSB Test and scored 97 outta a possible 115 on the first take. Again, the study guides helped.

I took the AFOQT 2 years ago. I just went to the public library and checked out some of the prep books they had there.
Be up to snuff on doing math by hand; no calculators allowed. Practice the block counting, shape rotation, and chart reading tests. Being familiar with those before taking the actual test helped me a lot.
If I remember correctly, everything else is your typical standardized test stuff; grammar, reading comprehension, science/math, etc.
Oh, and the aviation knowledge questions are practically straight out of the private pilot knowledge test bank. If you're at least a private pilot, you don't have much excuse to not ace the aviation knowledge test section.

I took the ASTB about a year ago and scored a 7/8/7 60, I believe out of 9/9/9 80. I'd recommend the ARCO Officer Candidate Tests book. It has a combined study guide for all of the military tests. It could be comparing apples to oranges, but I'd assume it's all relative. BTW the book's questions were much harder than the tests.

Ditto on the books, they'll help you be prepared. You won't learn anything from them but they will prepare your mind and give you a good idea of what to expect, which is good since the test is timed.
Another bit of advice is to do the best you can on ALL parts of the test, not just the pilot parts. I've heard of people only making an effort on the parts of the test that apply to the career field they're looking to go into, but I can tell you if you score well on all 5 parts, it will get attention.
