MCAS Beaufort Update

They've added 4 displays since my last visit (?) - everything after the A4 inside the gate was new to me. Interesting that they outsourced the gate security. 2 or 3 F18s were playing in the pattern while I was there (Friday 10/21) - only got crappy pictures of them in flight :(

Gate Guards - October 2011
FJ3 Fury VMF 312 - Lt. Col F.N. "Speedo" Latt
F/A 18 Hornet VMFA 115 - Lt. Col M. H. "Gump" Phares
F8 Crusader No Squadron Assigned - Lt. Col W. H. Rankin - 1st Crusader CO 1957 - 1959 and Lt. Col W.E. "WZL" Weigel
F4 Phantom VMFA 251 - No names

Just inside the Gate
A4 Skyhawk H&MS 31 - Lt. Col LC Gray
F/A 18C Hornet VFA 86 CDR Michael "Spunk" Connor + CDR John "Beaker" Perrone
HH-46D Sea Knight No Squadron - Lt. Col Brian "Mad Dog" Murtha

Outside the O Club
F/A 18D Hornet VMFA 332(AW) - Lt. Col D. A. "Pony" Wilbur

I'll put together a webpage or put photos on Fickr if anyone is interested in seeing them. Also got to see the TINY house I grew up on in Laurel Bay.

There are a few new ones since the last time I was there then which was just in mid 2010. I don't remember the Hornet in front of the O'Club. Looks like the names are for the current sitting COs.

They were able to refurbish the O'Club by demolishing everything except the slab of concrete that maintained the building number assigned. If they took out that slab, that would constitute new construction (new building #) and tons of paperwork/begging for funding. Adapt and overcome!

Wednesday steak night at the O'Club. Huge slabs of meat, gimmie 14 oz (I was only 10) of that NY Strip medium please. Very tasty.

I was there when they started that refurbishment.
Did you go inside the club when you were there?

Just spent a few days and NAS Key West, an F-4, R-5 Vigilante, an A-4.....Nice base, fun time...almost added a C-17 gate guard but we fixed it!!!!

Just remembered another one

F4-E at Camden, SC (KCDN), about 30 NE of CAE. A little different to have a fighter at a civvie airport.

B-52 at KMCO... McCoy AFB. I think General Mitchell Field (KMKE) has a WWII bomber displayed (B-25?).

There's an F-101 Voodoo at SUS... also another F-101 parked off route 102 leaving Halifax airport

There used to be a Bearcat (or perhaps T-28, can't remember) out by the gate in Cozumel, Mexico
