Lackland NCO earns Bronze Star

It is important to note, that the BSM is authorized to be awarded for meritorious achievement in the "combat" zone. However, the trend has been to hand BSM's out like candy, when a MSM or AFCOM would have been more appropriate. I'm not saying that every person should not be awarded a BSM for non-valor achievments, it just needs to be more restrictive. I personally do not hold a grudge against a person with what I like to call a "deployed MSM" i.e. a BSM WITHOUT the V device, unless they start acting like an idiot. I have seen medical/office worker folks rocking the BSM trucker hats and liscense plates. It is pretty idiotic in my book as most people don't realize there is a huge difference between having the "V" device and not having it. I have many PJ/CCT/TACP friends who have been awarded the BSM w/V who are way more humble. I have also seen two friends of mine who were recently awarded the DFC w/ "V" get their medals AFTER another was awarded his BSM WITHOUT "V". The DFC is higher in the order of precedence than the BSM and should have been awarded first. Just goes to show the watered down false auroa that the BSM WITHOUT "V" holds in the USAF. Just my two cents....

Meet the Air Force's first female four star. Take a look at her "major" awards and decorations.

Kind of surprised they were dumb enough to put this out a week later.

Meh, whatever. They were in the combat zone, and they performed a meritorious achievement or service so they fall within the guidelines of the medal. It doesn't count for more points on the test then a MSM, so it is just another fancy piece of fabric.
They did not get the Valor device.

Coming from a guy that deals with contractor clerks at his Res base, I promise you you would reconsider the first time they stuck you into a room that shared a bathroom with someone, was dirty or unstocked and then checked you out on the wrong day. Contrast that with a SrA who sees an officer/NCO flyer come in....they will normally give you the lodging you deserve/need.

As much as I want to stay in a little longer, the current culture in the AF (can't speak to other services) is just sickening to me. I'm so over the whole "everyone gets an award" mentality. The Wing quarterly awards came out last week, and it's the same old thing. Four NCO's on the Wing Staff, so each one wins one of the quarters. Same thing for the civilians...and they admit it!! The only award I've ever needed was direct deposited into my checking account every two weeks. When someone got anything above a Commendation Medal, that member had really done something special. Handing out medals normally associated with actual combat, and not just being in the combat zone makes my skin crawl. I had a crew in Afghanistan that wanted the Combat Action Medal because we got a few AAA rounds lobbed in our general vicinity. We were at 19K, at night, and completely blacked out. We didn't maneuver, and my pulse rate never changed a beat, but they wanted the ribbon. I refused to submit for that. I think they got it after a long (and friendly) discussion, but even if they didn't, I stand by my decision. I hope the medal mentality changes soon, but I'm skeptical. Sorry for the long post, just had to air off a little.
