Hawg and Thunder, where are you getting your information?
I have a good friend who is "flying" them at Eglin. In the 1.5 years he's been doing it he only did a few engine runs. From him, he says the program is totally screwed up and it's going to be a while before they work out the kinks.

I fear that the current leadership will scrap the A-10 to help pay for the F-35. I think I heard Welsh say that single role fighters have no role in today's AF (except the F-22).

The F-22 has air-ground capabilities, it isn't a single-role aircraft. I agree with Welsh's statement, but I would argue the A-10 is dual-role in a non-traditional way as it has a place in a full-up war in an anti-armor role as well as a limited intensity war as a general air support platform.

The F-22 has about the same capabilities air to ground as the A-10 does air to air.

Now now hawg - don't be so hard on yourself!
I turned with a few at once out of DM and I was very impressed with their engaged maneuvering and comm.
You've got some range on that thing~!!

It was designed and built as a pure fighter. Post cold-war when the AF was afraid they were going to loose it, they taped some bombs to the wings and added an "A" for Attack to the name (ie F/A-22).

I've never seen it supporting ground training maneuvers in a CAS role, and I don't think it's dropped any bombs in sand-land.

Eventually the AF dropped the "A".

For all practical purposes I would consider it single role. Wanna place on bet on when it will get used in an air-to-mud capacity?

What other manned asset can drop on current generation IADS/double-digit SAMS?

Yeah, it's easy to forget about that while plinking talibans.

But do we absolutely need a manned asset? It would be nice, but at what cost? There are other ways to get at those IADS (they can't by their nature be hardened, so it doesn't take a big penetrator).

But how do you find a mobile site in an EA non-permissive environment that doesn't allow for real time datalinks? The MWS-specific parochialisms/my jet is better than your jet discussions are fun as Capt's and within small group get togethers, but someone has to consider the real world full spectrum of requirements out there when it comes to real planning.
