I went through Dowtown in November; flew the Dutchess. They also have a Twin Commanche that some guys were flying. It looked like whatever you end up doing, they'll send the appropriate gouge early. One practice flight, then check the next day. Sometimes people need/want an extra practice flight, which may change the timing/price. I did ground instruction and one practice flight on Wednesday, then checked and passed on Thursday. $1363 paid to Downtown, $400 paid to the DPE. Cheap and fast, and it didn't have the feel of a certificate-mill. Highly recommended.

Has anyone been to Prairie Air Service outside of Wichita lately? I booked a slot there in a couple of months to finish up the ATP (written complete and need practical by July). Just wondering if anyone had any recent experience there?

Whoever you go with do research ahead of time with squadron mates. Some ATP schools/course are much more military friendly than others.

I know a guy who pink-slipped his ATP because he did not follow this advice. |
All ATPs... Military friendly... Especially locations near military bases.

ATP Practical - Manassas VA
American Aviation at Manassas Regional Airport just started offering an ATP practical program. It is not a pilot mill school so students are a mostly older with established careers. Most instructors are active or retired military. They are using an Piper Aztec, its a bit bigger the a Seminole used by other schools in the area. The cost of the airplane and institutor is less than the other places in the area. I also understand the DPEs are former military as well. I had a tough time finding a place to take my ATP practical, wish I knew about them before I travel across the country to do it.

Has anyone here used Texas Aviation Academy in New Braunfels? Any reviews of their ATP program?

I just finished my practical in southeast VA.
I used Rob G. (USN E-2 guy) at Curtis Eads for the instruction piece. He's been doing this a while and truly enjoys general aviation and the training aspect. He is very thorough and knows how military folks approach training so he can steer you well. I would absolutely use him again. My DPE was John Phelps (Home Page). The eval was great. Not a 'gimme', but I didn't have to build the shuttle. Know your stuff, and it's a good time. Well thought out and good pace of events. Mr. Phelps was good at 'situational questions' for depth of knowledge and decision making evaluations. Glad it's over, and I'd use both again in a heart beat knowing what I know now. The DPE's in the area are booking up so, don't wait too long. |
