Default Cannon AFB / Clovis NM observations

....drove thru this town on a family trip, kids in tow, stopped to get gas in the family truckster and kept going. Noticed Cannon AFB on the way out....all I can say is being based in Clovis must be very boring, off-duty. No offense to Clovis locals, but the town is kinda dumpy with NOTHING to do, from what I could see.

Never been - but I've heard it referred to as Afcannonstan.

If you can work a Kunsan assignment on the back side you get the infamous Cankun assignment.

Now that AFSOC owns it, it's referred to as "Canandahar". Been the best recruiting tool the 919th SOW has ever had.

I did some work there a few times. We stayed at the Hampton out in town. Nice enough place as most are.....until you opened up the curtains in the room. The back of the hotel backed up against a salvage and tire junk yard. It was quite a funny picture. I concur satpak - it does look a little 'out there'.

Stopped for gas there once on a cross country. Jet broke. Spent a year of my life there one week. Stupid LT. I learned the hard way, never stop where you don't want to break!

I had a layover there a couple of years ago on a Saturday night. The crew and I wanted to go out for dinner/drinks and asked the van driver for his recommendations. He gave us a few, but then told us the last taxi company pulled out of there. We thought he was joking, but he wasn't. We ended up walking to an Italian restaurant that was pretty pathetic. Our Plan B was to buy beer in the gas station on the way back to hotel to play some crazy game requiring memorization and repeating which was pretty funny the more people drank! Oh and we were near a railroad crossing which seemed interesting at the time (for city folk like our crew, anyway) UNTIL a train flew by every 20 minutes blaring its horn. Hard to get rest with that! Driving to the base was even more depressing.......a very eye-opening experience where I felt for the locals and folks based there.

my kids found the F-111 on static display, in town, cool, we took pics (while locals wondered why) with the plane and a tank next to it. They also liked the multiple trains going down the tracks.

However dad thought he was on a different planet. NOTE: Del Rio TX (I have lived there myself) is not that bad, and "has San Antonio access" etc

But Clovis???????

later

While a FAIP at Laughlin I would stop and Cannon on XC, I think I mainly did it to remind myself that Del Rio wasn't the worst place on earth.
