Started stopping at AMA back in the PPL days. Saw my first CH-53A there from the Marine Reserve (MAG-41) unit out of NAS Dallas (at the time). Love that little on-field restaurant there.

How are the Supers making their way across country now BDGR?
Still using Millington. One of my parting shots to -106 was starting the process for the TCN approach there.

And in addition, it was not Big Spring!

3 legs on the way out is still the standard. Meridian/Amarillo, Scott AFB(or Lambert)/ABQ or COS. I like the turn in Madison when my jet doesn't break or the ANG doesn't get ****y about landing at "their" airport. Would you believe the Guard has a NOTAM in Madison saying no carrier breaks and PPR required even if parking at the FBO? Go figure...from MSN I generally go to COS or BKF then on into Fallon or El Centro.

On the way home with decent winds 2 legs is definitely the way to go either through Ft Worth/Tinker/Tulsa/Ft Smith then to Oceana, otherwise reverse routing on the 3 leg plan. We're generally carrying IMERs and a tank so the jets have a bit of drag.

I heard something about some place out there saying no carrier breaks.
The USN/USMC bases ought to put a NOTAM out requiring carrier breaks

I'm surprised even carrying the IMERs or tanks that the Supers have any trouble with making two legs considering how much more gas they carry. That routing you gave was the standard Legacy route - Tinker being my usual since I had family in town, but I hit Tulsa a few times too.

I think I'd rather stop in AMA
I think I was on the road about every other weekend, so I had it down to a science and Cannon was about perfect for squeezing all I comfortably could out of the Scooter while guaranteeing I'd have access to the stuff I needed (air & electric carts and LOX). As you know, the A-4 was very simple and dependable. The only time I ever broke down was having a starter shear off in NAS Dallas (speaking of fields that no longer exist). Worst American BOQ I ever stayed in. One head per floor and no phone or TV in the room. Was sitting in the check in building making a call from the pay phone (pre-cell phone days) when I heard an animal scratching in the overhead, then I see a paw poke through. Tell the desk clerk and he says, yeah, that's one of the raccoons, like it's well known and normal. Fortunately a couple of your fellow jarheads were there on a cross country from NGP and invited me out to view the local wildlife.

No A-gear? As often as not in the A-4, long field bidirectional gear was option one in an RTO... the overrun gear was option two and Escapac was option three.

Always cracked me up getting approved for the carrier break at an AF base knowing what they thought they were approving and what they approved were usually two entirely different things. Having said that, I was always extra careful looking for anyone doing T&Gs in the VFR pattern.

I do remember - though I have to admit my x/cs in the Scooter were limited.

Thye were there on a x/c because the Q was better than El Toro's! Same type of accomodations btw.

Most bases have gotten rid of the E-5 overrun gear too.

I drove thru Clovis/Cannon once PCSing from C Springs to Wichita Falls. I was armed with everything I would need when comparing Aviano, Spang, Hill, Shaw, Korea, and Cannon. Dos Gringos was born at Cannon, so something good has come out of there.

I think the hippies in Madtown get mad when there is too much noise coming from the airport.
