Dropping on stationary ships at anchorage or in port is already pretty easily achievable. If the guidance can be reliable enough to hit a moving target (which it looks like it is getting there), then this could be a great mission for a bomber that could give persistent coverage and drop lots of ordnance.

OK all my fellow military aviator brothers - help me out here as I've been out of the game for 3 years. Is there a *newer* version of the JDAM out there that can be actively guided after launch?

Aren't there laser JDAMS? GBU-54? I've been off the line since 03 when the Lightening pod was "hot stuff". I don't know how it works, but can it be guided?

I see it now under the 'Upgrades' section header of the Wiki article.
Seems like they have just made a JDAM into a combo JDAM/LGB - giving the user the opportunity to either drop on coordinates (JDAM style) or to actively guide using the laser (LGB style).

I thought JDAMS get a coordinate squirt prior to release, but cannot be updated in flight.

If the boat is doing 30 knots, it's going to be a clean miss. Not True?

The B-1 has the capability to generate a targeting solution on a moving target and pass it to the weapon. 15ish years ago we dropped dumb bombs on an RC controlled tank in the UTTR. Results were impressive. The problem is if the target changes speed or direction after the weapon is released (not to mention real world collateral damage concerns). There are ways to minimize these errors, but not eliminate them. However if you add a laser for end game guidance, well ... now you are getting somewhere.

BTW: I am told the pictures are file pictures NOT from the actual test. Which makes sense bases on the tail kit and seeker head (but I retired 7 years ago, so my knowledge is dated.)

Cheers T5

Not the right venue for talking capabilities, which have grown significantly.

B-1Bs are capable of low-earth orbit, but only 9BS crews are approved and certified for these kinds of operations.

Together with the 337th and the FTU, the 9BS is developing future capabilities which include earthquake generation and mitigation, both on and off existing fault lines.

Don't tell the Ellsworth clowns. They aren't cool enough to say 'dark' on the radio.
