IMHO this is due to the fact that the media had become the 4th branch of the government. Both yours and mine... and most of the rest of the world...
1- You can buy the most credible broadsheet, or the most sensational tabloid and read the same stories written for different readers.
2- You don't have to qualify that statement with a 'in the kindest way' on my account. If I were to neglect my honor and 'spill my guts' about what I have learned and seen you all would vomit. To that end Google Rebekah Brooks...
@ Winged Wheeler. Although 'we' are discovering new ways to mine oil all the time. The fact that we are figuratively looking under rocks to find it does suggest the end is nearing.

Documentation is all important, forgery is a shortcut that is all too easy to detect today. The decline of big media is a trend that has a definite and irreversible direction as long as management refuses to acknowledge the truth, presents blatant forgeries as news and ignores the real truth wherever and however it may be found. The fourth estate has seen its power dwindle because it has lost all responsibility to truth.
As a practical matter I don't care how truth is obtained, but forgery and half truths must be condemmed at any level. This is why credibility suffers and why the news is stalked by politicos, truth is the opposite of what they desire.

Hi jungle. I think that if we were to discuss this over a few coldies at a BBQ we would find we are actually on the same page. I have no particular interest in Rebekah Brooks. I used this as an example for commonality. It is playing out at roughly the same pace on all continents and demonstrates well the narcissistic nature of the media.
Your perception that I am avoiding the issue of 'forgeries' is wrong, kind-of... It would take a forum this sized to discuss media sins past. I am NOT sticking up for the MSM.
Readers must take some responsibility. The simple truth is a great many people consume the 'news' that agrees with their particular political views. These people are following their team, not keeping abreast of issues. Look at the 'liberal' giving the 'conservative' grief over 'gun control'. No amount of facts, research and intellectualism will change any-ones mind. Media outlets will 'take their angle' on issues like this based on its advertisers. Advertisers, in turn, decide where to place their ads based on the demographics of the news consumers. And around we go again... Did you see the Penn and Teller episode of BS about Computer Game Violence being a gateway / trigger for school killing sprees, this is a prime example of what I am speaking. Don't let the truth get in the way of a good.........
I wonder if the question should be; if the average 12 year old can figure the truth from lies, why can't the rest of us? We search for the news angles that sit well within ourselves, and tent to stick with that agency.

We have travelled far afield from the thesis of peak government, but the media no doubt plays a role.
I think Churchill said it best; Bessie Braddock: “Sir, you are drunk.”
Churchill: “Madam, you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober.”
Nancy Astor: “Sir, if you were my husband, I would give you poison.”
Churchill: “If I were your husband I would take it.”
A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.
Once in a while you will stumble upon the truth but most of us manage to pick ourselves up and hurry along as if nothing had happened.
===============================================
Critical thinking is something of a lost art, many of us would not recognize truth if it came up and bit us on the ass.
The real heart of the thesis is that Big Brother, in whatever form, is not really here to help us.

Disagree completely. We have always looked under rocks to get oil--it does not, therefore, follow from this that the end is near. Oil, methanol, ethanol, etc--we will have as much liquid fuel as we choose to have.
Why the scare quotes around we?
