Why go to a company teetering on bankruptcy when there are so many other options available.
Its all about getting 121 as fast as possible so this was a viable option. For me, commuting was the last thing I wanted. Everyone has their reasons... |

That’s great to hear! Thank you for the information! How long ago was your class, if you don’t mind me asking? Just trying to understand how my timeline will most likely look

Keep in mind that Silver is the old GulfStream international airlines renamed. Their reputation for training and the quality of pilots produced was about as low as can be. The program you are trained in does have a big impact on getting hired for future jobs.

New routes being added this month (Orlando to Marsh Harbour and Orlando to North Eleuthera). New Routes being added next month Orlando to Greensboro, NC and Nashville. Also adding additional daily routes between Orlando and Pensacola.
Additional planes are scheduled to be delivered this year. Right now N706SV is in NC getting work done to be added to the fleet. N708SV is enroute from France to be next in line to have work done to be added to the fleet. Things are looking up for the company, just need a solid string of good luck (and decision making) instead of the bad luck that always seems to find itself at Silver. |
Hi, I need to jumpseat from pns to tpa next week. Any idea how often the flights are payload optimized?

A couple of quick Questions
Fro you folks in the know.
Currently live in SAV and notice that silver wings flys in and out on the way to TPA/FLL. Is this a home every night at your base type flying, or do u have overnights. Is this a commutable job from SAV? How many legs are you doing a day. What are the flight benefits like. Feel free to add anything else you think might be important or PM me is you want to keep it private. Thank you all Sam. |

From what I heard, it doesn’t matter which base you apply for - they are going to send you where they need you.

There are talks of having a few overnights here and there but nothing specific. For Florida based, you can plan on doing anywhere from 2-6 legs per day. Flight benefits, beyond jump seat privileges, include: - ID 90 travel on other airlines (after 6 months from date of hire) and free flights on Silver, for you, spouse/domestic partner, kids, and parents. - You currently get 12 one way buddy passes that be given to any one of your extended family members or friends per year. If you want a great quality of life (home every day/night), Silver is a great place to work. Very few airlines allow for home in base every day. If you are wanting to commute, cost will go up as you will need a Crashpad/hotel since they don't have very many overnights. They offer an extra $300 per month to help offset the cost of commuting and staying in a hotel/Crashpad at their AFW base. |
Thank you for the quick input something to think about.

For the most part, SAV would be commutable but not necessarily on Silver as Silver does not fly to/from SAV every day. As a pilot, you could jump seat on other airlines through CASS and get there.

Not sure how old some of you guys are, but I'm 61, born, raised and currently living in West Palm Beach. Not sure how long it'd take me to get to hiring minimums. Being that SA is 121 and currently having to leave the flight deck at 65...I dunno. Personally, I hope it's raised to 65, hell even 70 for that matter. Some may say that as we age, we lose certain physical and mental attributes. Hogwash. Life expectancy has increase over the years b/c of people being more health conscience. Although I have a couple of health issues, they will not preclude me from flying professionally. Also, some may say that I'm being selfish and that I have SJS. To that point, I quote former President DT...go have intercourse with yourself...for lack of better terms and not using the vernacular. There are as many different ways to achieve the hiring minimums as there are people on this earth...LOL! Below are the paths I've considered to get to hiring min: Do Part 141 flight school (zero to hero in 7 months) Part 61...cheaper; but still fly 4-5 times a week Part 61 up to Comm w/ME rating; then time build in a ME a/c As I've said, I dunno. I could still do one of the aforementioned and do the Part 91/Part 135 (cargo) bop. Fly till you die. I guess I'm just gonna have to wait and see what comes down the pipeline. atp |

As someone with multiple types, I can attest to this. I would never discourage you from achieving your dream of flying for an airline.. however, I would say to consider the possibility of part 91/135 operations instead due to your possibly limited timeframe. If you can get everything done by 63.5, sure... Get hired and get a year of experience (invaluable). Then (assuming age requirements haven't changed) find a part 135 or 91 gig |

I always encourage students to pursue their dreams regardless of how old you are. Being that you currently are under a time crunch if the airlines are your dream of preference, there are several things to consider:

Yeah, I've always dreamed of saying, "Good evening from the flight deck folks. This is you CA speaking". I did fail to mention that I've always been interested in aviation since being knee-high to a duck. I'm former Civil Air Patrol (PB Cadet Squadron), Former US Army, and a 1987 grad of ERAU/Daytona Beach. Got my Bachelors in Air Studies w/aoc in Air Transportation Mgmt. I got a zillion hours of MSFS in the Cessna 172, BE-58, KA-350, and the B-737-8.No, it's not actual but, I figure I got a jump on things so to speak. Again, preciate the transparency. atp |
Jumpseat
I’ve recently been denied the jumpseat the last 2 times by the gate agent in EYW when I’ve tried riding on you guys. The first time, there was a seat open but they said my roller board would put the flight overweight and the second time was completely full minus the jumpseat. Just curious to know if that’s a common issue or if the gate agent was just trying to get the flight out quick. Flight was EYW-MCO both times. I’ve had luck before getting a seat in the back and am always appreciative of the Silver crew for getting me on! Appreciate the input!

[QUOTE=GhostRider14;3644754]
Only thing I can think of is EYW is very weight limited for the runway. Otherwise, there is no policy thing I can think of that would keep them from authorizing you on the jump seat for the flight. |

Sorry we couldn't get you on our flight! Our team in Key West is pretty good, They won't deny you just to deny you... I've taken numerous jump seaters from Key West. If we're carrying a lot of bags, and/or if there is a lot of weather (which tends to happen in FL this time of year) and we have to file an alternate with lots of extra fuel it can certainly put us to where we max out on weight.

AFW Cargo side
For those in the know:
What is the training foorprint for new hires flying Cargo? Is it more of a quick turn around or any overnights? What are the routes of of AFW? Do you need to meet Part 121.436 in order to upgrade? thanks for those who will answer. |

Do you need to meet Part 121.436 in order to upgrade? thanks for those who will answer. --- 3.5 weeks of ground school, 3-4 weeks to complete flat panel training and sim training (six sessions each), the about 1-2 weeks of OE. --- AFW pilots also have to do a 500 differences course (training is in the 600) which takes one day of ground and 3 sim sessions - Due to cargo configuration, flights are 1.5 to 2 hours away, you sit for about 1.5 to 2 hours to unload/load, then fly back - Current routes: flights from AFW to - Des Moines, Kansas City, Mobile, and Omaha. - All 121 operations require you to meet times listed in 122.436 to upgrade, regardless of passenger or cargo ops. |
AFW Cargo side
For those in the AFW:
How many hours do you guys fly in a month on average? Is it true you guys get an additional living allowance for being based in AFW? Do you see any slow down on the Amazon load factor in the coming months? |

The load factor varies a lot, even day to day, but I don't see it slowing down overall. |
