Default How to file your International Flight Plan?

Hi All,

I use the ForeFlight App on my iPhone for filing my domestic flight plans all over the US and I love it. Fast, easy and simple. Slight issue came up today and I was looking for some help. I tried a brief search and couldn't find a good answer so here we are.

How do you file your ICAO international flight plans? We called our local FSS station this morning hoping that would be easy but it was a disaster. Long story short, 20 mins on the phone and the clearance never came so we had to call again and re-file causing a delay. Is there an app or easy way to do it on the iPhone?

Thanks.

Gigity

It very much depends on the country you're flying to/from. Some places still require paper copies of the flight plan to be delivered to the tower before a clearance will be issued. Some countries will auto-reject flight plans without certain remarks in the ICAO strip. Eurocontrol plans will be rejected without a CFMU pass route. There are lots of pay services that will allow you to just put together a flight plan from A to B, and there will be manual intervention to ensure the plan gets sent in the correct format to the correct people, but I am not aware of any free service that will do this for all countries.

I probably should have been more specific. It's only from the US to Mexico. The flight plan filed back to the US is done by a service

www.fltplan.com

You will need to set up an account, but its free and they will file to Canada and Mexico for you with ICAO format if you fill out the ICAO aircraft information section in your aircraft profile.

If you want to use the FSS, you have to file through Miami. It doesn't matter where in the US you are departing from (for points south). When you get to a briefer, ask him to transfer you to Miami (they should know this, but obviously your guy didn't). Works like a charm.
